Job Summary

The Pediatric BMT and Cell Therapy Data Manager will play a key role in developing, coordinating, managing, and executing tasks under the purview of the Program Manager, Administrative Manager, Quality Managers, and Medical Director. This will require the capacity to deal with a diverse group of personnel. Ability for multitasking and dealing with high volumes of work and a sense for data, project management, and problem solving.

The Data Manager will manage and abstract clinical data. S/he will participate in the evaluation, maintenance, and modifications of the clinical outcomes database. S/he will generate, analyze standardized reports on patient treatments, toxicity, and outcomes; respond to requests for information regarding BMT and cellular therapy patients; and participate in collecting follow-up information from outside sources. The Data Manager will comply with the institutional, regulatory and federal regulations.

The Data Manager will also work closely with the Program Manager and with other managers on projects designed to improve effectiveness or efficiency in data accuracy, data management, efficiency in operations, assist with development of benchmarks to better oversee the entire quality aspects of the Department.

The Pediatric BMT and Cellular Therapy Program is an expanding program and the successful candidate will use skills as a experience and seasoned data manager to manage, plan, administer the data and quality of the Pediatric BMT Program.

Reporting to the Program Manager, the candidate will be an independent, detail oriented individual, who contributes to quality improvement initiatives, and is committed to the values of the program. The candidate will be a highly organized individual who is able to abstract, trend and analyze clinical data from the electronic medical record for data submission to the Center of International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) and other outside repositories. The candidate will be able to collect and synthesize data to monitor quality benchmarks, create reports, audits, and will share these findings at a Quality Meeting. The candidate will utilize these findings to perform short and long term planning and collaborate in the development of strategies to work towards achieving the set goals and metrics of the Pediatric BMT quality program.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $75,700 - $123,100 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital BMT program and Cell and Gene Therapy Center of Excellence provide cutting-edge, exceptional care for children and adolescents facing life-threatening hematologic and oncologic conditions. We offer a multidisciplinary approach to deliver care across our San Francisco Mission Bay and Oakland Children's Hospital locations with leading faculty experts on pediatric blood disorders, inherited metabolic disorders, immunology, oncology, and stem cell transplantation.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in a clinical or biological or a healthcare-related field
  • Good communication skills; both verbal and written. Must be a clear and concise communicator.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including but not limited to: problem-solving, teamwork development, leadership, mentorship. Works well with others to achieve common goals. Ability to cultivate relationships with multiple stakeholders at various levels of administration.
  • Effectively uses medical center's clinical information and documentation application programs, including but not limited to EPIC (APEX), OnCore, FileMaker Pro, and other data management systems. Ability to perform all commonly applicable functions in word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality of protected health information. Compliance and knowledge of HIPAA privacy laws.

Preferred Qualifications


  • At least 2 years experience with data management
  • Basic Life Support: CPR and AED
  • Advanced Degree
  • Knowledge of quality improvement measures and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of CIBMTR reporting, data abstraction, and quality data submission
  • Knowledge of medical/oncology processes and terminology, experience and knowledge of IRB policy and procedure, background in science/medicine; preferably in pediatric hematology/oncology.
  • At least one year of experience in project/program coordination, either at UCSF or at another academic or research institution
  • Knowledge of IRB requirements as well as FDA regulations for human subject safety.
  • Experience in developing SOPs and program evaluations
  • Prior experience in data management, clinical research in various areas of oncology, or lab based research
  • Prior experience with UCSF, particularly within the pediatric oncology setting, data management, and institutional policies for data reporting compliance and regulation.
  • Able to sit and work at a computer for up to 8 hours/day; stand/walk for 3-6 hours; bend/stoop for up to 3 hours; reach for up to 3 hours; repetitive use of upper extremities for up to 8 hours; able to lift and/or carry 25 pounds; able to hear alarms, clients and/or instructions. Ability to see accurately from 20 inches to 20 feet.
