Program Manager RN - Patient Safety

Waterloo, IA - Allen Hospital

Day Shift - Full-time

Supports UnityPoint Health - Waterloo and Marshalltown's philosophy of patient centered care by providing the overall direction of the organization's patient safety program, including identifying opportunities for improvement to be used to develop an annual patient safety work plan and to answer questions and concerns about the hospital, its policies and the rights of the patients. Collaborates with leadership, providers, team members, and care coordination teams to resolve patient concerns and act as a mediator when treatment and care is involved. Responsible for the integration of performance improvement methods into clinical processes to improve the quality, safety and outcomes of patient care. Works closely with the Regional Director of Risk Management to mitigate risk concerns and to facilitate analysis and process improvement of significant patient safety events.


Responsibilities

Patient Safety

  • Identifies and analyzes key causes, patterns or trends that indicate high-risk practices which could compromise patient safety and increase risk.
  • Completes an annual patient safety assessment and prioritization work plan, as a portion of the Organization's Performance Improvement (PI) Plan.
  • Coordinates the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Patient Safety Survey and shares results with the administrative team and hospital leadership.
  • Educates the organization regarding patient safety methodology, error accountability, culture of safety and other aspects of the Patients Safety Program through involvement in various committees.
  • Serves as key leader and facilitator of the Patient Safety Committee.

Program Management

  • Develops data-driven action plans, educational resources and programs, including reference guides, forms and presentations to increase patient safety.
  • Working in cooperation with the Director, is responsible for supporting providers and leadership with initiating, implementing, and evaluating improvement initiatives to meet the quality metric targets as identified in the Hospital Performance Improvement Plan.
  • Leads/facilitates performance improvement activities/teams identified as organizational priorities Collaborates with leaders to implement tracer methodology and other learning activities for continuous readiness.
  • Assists with management and follow-up of patient complaints, serving in a patient advocate role. Coordinates and manages the feedback reporting system which includes following up on events to ensure processes are in place and hardwired.
  • Actively participates on committees related to Patient Safety and Risk Management.
  • Manages the patient complaint processing system; provide resolution feedback to patients and staff.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.

Experience:

  • Three to five years of registered nurse experience.
  • Preferred: Three to five years of registered nurse experience in patient safety or patient care performance improvement or relevant area.

Licenses/Certifications:

  • Current license in the state of Iowa or meets criteria established by Iowa Board of Nursing.

  • Valid driver's license when driving any vehicle for work-related reasons.
  • Preferred: Certificated Professional in Healthcare Quality certification.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to direct others and to exercise judgment in problem-solving scenarios
  • Ability to lead and/or participate in multidisciplinary teams
  • Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of general nursing theory and practice and an expanded knowledge of current clinical and specialized patient care concepts.
  • Must possess a broad and varied knowledge base that is continually enhanced and updated through self-directed study and participation in educational opportunities.

  • Must possess knowledge of performance improvement and quality standards.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of legal/regulatory standards and participates in initiatives and compliance to ensure continuous readiness.

  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Work, Excel and Power Point.
  • Use of usual and customary equipment used to perform essential functions of the position
