What You Will Do:

Gannett Fleming TranSystems is seeking Geotechnical Engineers to support the design and construction of critical infrastructure projects in Northern California. This hybrid position requires the ability to commute to our Roseville, CA, or Oakland, CA, office as needed.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to collaborate directly with civil and structural engineers and geologists to implement innovative geotechnical solutions through all phases of a project's lifecycle. Our Geotechnical, Dams & Hydraulics specialists excel in tackling the most challenging geotechnical assignments to provide innovative solutions for dams, foundations, underground construction, earth structures, levees, water resources, ports, harbors, and marginal building sites. Our geotechnical engineers and geologists are experts in dam stability and seepage, landslides, earth retention structures, geotechnical earthquake engineering, seismic hazards, earthquake ground motion development, and structure foundations.

We have completed thousands of geotechnical and geophysical investigations across the U.S., ranging from small-scale projects to large, complex dams, highways, bridges, piers, wharves, and underground structures. Our diverse portfolio also includes transportation facilities (roadways, rail, airports, ports, and harbors), water conveyance structures (levees, canals, flumes, pipelines), stream restoration, and more helping to address California's critical geotechnical challenges.

In this capacity, the successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Determining client requirements and developing suitable scopes of work, schedules, and budgets to achieve project objectives.
  • Developing and managing subsurface investigation and laboratory testing programs, with occasional participation in field exploration activities.
  • Performing routine and complex data analysis and engineering calculations, including slope stability, seepage, liquefaction potential, foundation support, and lateral earth pressures.
  • Preparing high-quality reports, drawings, and specifications to meet scope, schedule, cost, and regulatory requirements.
  • Designing, installing, and maintaining geotechnical instrumentation systems.
  • Collaborating with clients, construction personnel, and multidisciplinary teams to develop and implement appropriate designs and project solutions.
  • Reviewing contractor drawings, evaluating the need for design changes, and providing appropriate geotechnical recommendations.
  • Supervising and mentoring junior-level staff, as needed.
  • Leading tasks and project teams in a multi-disciplinary environment.
  • Traveling up to 30% to Gannett Fleming offices, client locations, or project sites, which may include overnight stays.
Education | Experience:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering; Master's Degree in Geotechnical Engineering is preferred.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required.
  • 5-10 years of direct work experience in geotechnical engineering.
  • Proven expertise in advanced geotechnical software applications, including APILE, LPILE, SHAFT, GeoStudio, Slope/W, CLIQ, SETTLE3, gINT, and proficiency in numerical calculations using spreadsheets.
  • Experience with MicroStation or AutoCAD is preferred.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of engineering principles, concepts, and practices applied to geotechnical engineering, including foundation systems, levees, dams, and waterfront structures.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in standard office software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage small work groups and oversee project tasks effectively.
