Description of Work |
This position will provide academic advisement to ECSU's Office of Student Success and Retention constituents (freshmen, sophomores, undecided majors, and transfer students) through one-on-one meetings, workshops, or presentations regarding majors. Academic advisors will assist students in establishing degree requirements, academic progress, and selection of courses for future semesters. The academic advisor will assist students in educational planning and problem-solving and will provide appropriate resources and referrals to any other campus support services for information and aid in making academic and personal decisions. They will additionally advise students about academic standards, policies, programs, and student information systems available to facilitate their success. Occasional work may be required beyond normal working hours. |
Competencies/Knowledge Skills, and Abilities Required in this Position |
Position requires strong interpersonal skills which would allow effective communication with students using blended advising techniques, administrators and faculty; ability to write reports; strong computer skills; and effective organizational skills and customer services skills. Possess knowledge in developing intervention workshops, events, and activities. Possess an interest in working with a diverse population of students. |
Minimum Training and Experience |
A master's degree with a minimum of two years of experience (3+ years preferred) working in academic advising, retention or other student success initiatives. Experience teaching in a setting of higher education preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook) is required for the position. |
