Converting Operator

Summary of Job

This position serves as an Operator with the goal of safely, effectively, and efficiently meeting or exceeding all manufacturing and quality standards. Primary responsibilities include operating the production line, maintaining set production standards, ensuring product quality, and assisting the Assistant Operator and/or the Production Utility Worker as needed/if applicable. Conduct all required quality checks including but not limited to length/weight checks, vacuum tests, micrometer (mic) checks, and accurately complete all required paperwork. Minimize scrap while maximizing the return of any scrap and reproduction into the machine.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities




  • Set up and operate the production line for various products, meeting or exceeding production rates, meeting customer specifications, and minimizing waste levels. This includes but is not limited to:


    • Assist Assistant Operator in operating Powered Industrial Vehicles to stage product, ensuring appropriate level of production supplies/materials are available with goal of minimizing downtime for current and following shift. For lines with no Assistant Operator, the Operator will be responsible for this task. This involves gathering/preparing all necessary materials, parts, and tools to ensure availability and accessibility (ex: cores, labels, pallets, tape, bags, etc.).
    • Setting up and adjusting machinery.
    • Operate core cutting machine and pallet jack.
    • Separating scrap into appropriate film-type gaylord.
    • Utilize effective leadership skills to direct the Assistant Operator and/or Production Utility Worker (if applicable).
    • Performing minor maintenance including but not limited to cleaning air filters, Total Productive Maintenance (TPM's), and Preventative Maintenance (PM's).
    • Keeping work areas clean and ensuring tools/equipment are in proper places. If applicable, assist Assistant Operator and/or Production Utility Worker with housekeeping throughout assigned shift to ensure an orderly and safe environment.
    • Assure all product is properly packaged (sawed, bagged and tied, etc.). For lines that have a Production Utility Worker and/or Assistant Operator, the Operator will be responsible for assisting with packaging and stacking product when needed.


  • Ensure compliance with safety and work regulations including the use of required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and follow all safety rules. Attend meetings and complete safety training as required. Report all hazardous conditions to the Lead, Operations Supervisor, or Plant Manager immediately for corrective action.
  • Report any accident, incident or near miss to the Team Lead, Supervisor, Manager or Plant Manager.
  • Conduct all required quality/customer specification checks including.


    • Continuously monitoring machine operation to ensure accurate product measurements and all quality specifications are maintained. This includes but is not limited to setting, checking, and maintaining product dimensions such as color, weight, slits, perforations, widths, lengths, etc.
    • Physically and visually inspecting all products.
    • Enter production/quality reporting data into machine computer accurately, signing off that products meet all quality requirements.
    • Promptly reporting all quality defects to the appropriate team members.


  • Assist Maintenance Team with troubleshooting issues when needed.
  • Maintain good employee relations. Adhere to Company policies and procedures. Refer all employee relations issues to the Lead, Production Supervisor, or Plant Manager.
  • Trains/mentors Assistant Operator and/or Production Utility Worker when required/requested (if applicable).
  • May be assigned to different production lines and areas as needed per company demand.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.



Competency (Knowledge, skills, and abilities)



  • Prior manufacturing or similar experience required.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude required.
  • Good mathematical skills required.
  • Ability to operate a forklift and other power industrial vehicles in a safe and effective manner.
  • Ability to take coaching well and communicate respectfully with others to ensure and promote a positive teamwork culture.
  • Ability to read a tape measure and document quality readings.
  • Ability to communicate with team members including employees effectively and respectfully on the previous or following shift during shift transition.
  • Knowledgeable about safety requirements and guidelines in manufacturing/warehouse environments.Must be safety conscious, able to understand and adhere to all Department and Plant rules, regulations, and notices.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, follow standardized work instructions and adhere to safe work practices in a continuous improvement culture.
  • Knowledge and experience with Systems, Applications, and Products in Data Professing (SAP) or similar Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems required, or ability to learn.



Environment



  • Non airconditioned, indoor environment. Heat may exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Humidity may exceed 80%.
  • Noise may exceed 85dB+.
  • Work around and with manufacturing machinery, exposure to moving equipment.



Physical Characteristics:



  • Frequent standing, up to 12 hours. At times standing may exceed 12 hours.
  • Walking, stooping, squatting, up to 75%.
  • Frequent lifting, pushing, pulling, up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent reaching, bending, twisting
  • Occasional stair/ladder climbing


  • Frequent and repetitive use of shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, elbows, wrist, hands, and fingers.



Position Type



  • Full time, hourly, non-exempt.
  • Shift work (2-week rotating shifts, 12-hour shifts on rotations and 6 hours each Wednesday).
  • Overtime per business demand.



Education and Experience



  • A High School Diploma, GED or equivalent work experience required.
  • Previous work experience in a manufacturing and/or warehouse environment preferred.
  • Must have stable work history.



Hourly rate of pay starts at $20.36 with an additional dollar differential
