Brief Summary of Job Duties:

Under general supervision and working independently, provides connectivity, trouble-shooting, and configuration activities for services provided by campus' central telephone system (PBX), peripheral voice/data/CATV communications equipment using the various intra-building and inter-building data infrastructure for which the department is responsible. Assumes shared responsibility for the cable plant by determining and assigning the appropriate cable pairs, working in concert with other telecommunications technicians for required changes in cable pair assignments. Collaborating with cable maintenance and installation crews on locating cable, cable tray, conduits, access panels, and manholes for the construction, adding and/or maintaining the cable plant. Reviewing and verifying all completed work orders for accuracy of cable assignments, and recording all changes to both outside and inside cable plant. Configures, installs, tests, repairs and maintains complex voice and data communications equipment, circuits and services in a blended protocol communications network environment. The position requires climbing ladders, lifting materials, working in vaults, manholes, ceilings, Confined Space, etc. Regular use of small hand tools and test equipment. Must be able to work in noisy switch rooms, hot, moist, and dirty vaults and manholes, and environments that are cold, windy, and undesirable for long-term exposure. Participates in campus cross-functional and cross divisional initiatives and projects as scheduled, ensuring a high degree of technical quality and accuracy to support a varied technical/service community.

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 1-3 years Fiber optic experience.
  • 1-3 years Copper cable experience.
  • 1-3 years Working with an underground copper and fiber plant.
  • 1-3 years Knowledge of multi-pair copper, termination and splicing.
  • 1-3 years Knowledge of fiber optic cabling, termination and splicing.
  • 1-3 years Ability to pay close attention to detail, and make sound decisions using information at hand.
  • 1-3 years Skills in written communication for correspondence.
  • 1-3 years Must be able to perceive differences in wire and cable colors.
  • ICT Fundamentals License/Certification within 120 Days.
  • Confined Space License/Certification within 60 Days.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associate's Degree in related area and/or equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Knowledge of Codes (NEC) and Standards (Div27).
  • Ability to work with clients regarding engineering problems, confer with customer representatives while communicating work with the Outside Plant Supervisor.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

60% - Installation

  • Participates in campus cross-functional and cross divisional initiatives and projects as scheduled, ensuring a high degree of technical quality and accuracy to support a varied technical/service community.
  • Performs installations and preventative/corrective maintenance on departmental and customer owned intra-building and inter-building communications equipment and cabling using established or adapted trouble-shooting techniques based on the interaction of sub-unit systems, adapts diverse methodologies or exercises originality for problem resolution or non-standard installations.
  • Performs fusion splicing on fiber cable, tests fiber installations to standards, repairs fiber optic cabling in both exterior and interior building environments using complex fiber optic equipment.
  • Making necessary preparations required for splicing, rearranging and terminate outside plant copper cable.
  • Performing splicing operations in connection with the installation, rearrangement, and repair of outside plant facilities. This includes fiber/copper cable, wire, terminals, loop carrier electronics and light guide facilities and various fiber optic applications which may be aloft, underground, or buried.
  • Uses complex test equipment in both structured and non-structured network environments. Work in manholes and confined space, outdoors and in inclement weather conditions.

25% - Maintenance

  • Work with heavy duty power equipment and hand tools in the construction and repair of outside plant cable facilities, conduit and pole lines.
  • Maintenance of existing underground infrastructure, utilizing water pumps and generators following established guidelines; cleaning water and debris from manholes, rod existing conduit structures, some vacant and some occupied, installing pull ropes with metal locating strand.

10% - Customer Service

  • Works closely with customers to interpret the customer's communications requirements in attaching customer-owned equipment to campus networks while managing the efficient use of departmental equipment resources.
  • Provide Vendor escort to UCSB owned properties.
  • Prepares accurate cost estimates for customer requests as well as detailed documentation of installed systems and attachments.

5% Associated Responsibilities

  • Provide backup installation and maintenance services for the campus switch room.
  • Supports the department's goal of providing positive, innovative and effective customer service through performance of job functions.
  • Provide and maintain accurate data base information on voice and data services including backbone, riser and station cable assignments and ensure that the information is kept current in Pinnacle by the documentation team.
  • Work with the documentation team to ensure the database design is efficient for voice cross connect data.
