DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As an engineering intern, for the Bureau of Operations, Highway Safety and Traffic Operations Division, you will be responsible for analyzing crash data, which encompasses for wrong-way crashes, freeway cross-median crashes, vulnerable road users (VRUs), lane departures, and more. Additionally, you will assess locations for safety improvement options along with analyzing the effectiveness of safety countermeasures. The intern will utilize analytical methods from the AASHTO Highway Safety Manual. This internship serves as a valuable opportunity to refine your technical skills, translate theoretical concepts into real-world applications, and work alongside committed engineering professionals who prioritize innovation and quality.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time internship that will run from 5/1/2025 through 8/29/2025
  • Work hours are 7:30 am to 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Work hours will vary based on position
  • Some positions may require travel
  • Compensation is credit based:
    • Less than 90 credits - $20.76
    • Over 90 credits - $21.64

  • REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Students who are interested in a PennDOT internship must meet all of the following requirements:
    • Must be a high school graduate or college student enrolled (or intending to enroll) on a full-time or part-time basis in a 2- or 4- year post-secondary education program for the fall semester.
    • In good academic standing (as defined by a GPA of 2.0 or higher)
    • Must be at least 18 years of age
    • Special Requirement: Possession of a valid Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License.

    Additional Requirements:
    • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

    Preferred Majors:
    • Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
