Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Laboratory Technician for the School of Arts and Sciences ( SAS) in the lab of Dr. Monica Driscoll in the Nelson Labs Building, Busch Campus.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Provides professional level laboratory technical support duties involving the application of scientific research methods and techniques.
  • Performs a variety of tasks devoted to understanding the biology of healthy aging, exercise and proteostasis using the C. elegans genetics model.
  • Conducts C. elegans survival and mobility assays as part of a multi-institution team dedicated to discovery of heath span and lifespan-promoting interventions.
  • Handles data organization and statistical analysis.
  • Strains generation and maintenance. C. elegans genetic crosses, strain maintenance, genotyping, freezing.

Minimum Education and Experience
  • A bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline. A combination of two years college-level science curriculum plus two years relevant laboratory technician or research study experience carrying out research protocols and tests may be substituted for the degree. An additional equivalent amount of college-level study in an appropriate science curriculum may be substituted for the experience in the above combination.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Use of personal vehicle in order to travel for business demands; a valid driver's license would be required for this position.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of scientific empirical procedures.
  • Must understand the fundamentals of the science.
  • Must be able to read and understand technical documents.
  • Must perform basic scientific routines, protocols, and tests.
  • Must articulate data to researchers.
  • Must be able to operate and maintain sophisticated equipment.
  • Ability to record and maintain data in computerized and non-computerized formats.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively.
  • Will be required to participate in required occupational health and safety programs.
  • May require a valid driver's license, two years driving experience, and successful completion of the Rutgers Defensive Driving Course.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Related lab experience.
  • Experience in the culture and maintenance of C. elegans.
  • Experience with microscopy preferred.
  • Two years of experience in a laboratory setting emphasizing precision in media preparation.
  • Experience with C. elegans manipulations, especially survival and mobility analyses.

Equipment Utilized
  • CeleST C. elegans Swim Tracker data collection, -80 freezers, incubators and autoclaves, microscopy
Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Regular workweek may include evening and/or weekend work.
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 30 pounds.
