The Surgical Technologist III is an advanced level technologist with expansive knowledge of surgical procedures offered at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital. Acts as a member of the surgical team providing patient care to the patients undergoing surgical procedures in all areas, including complex procedures, by assisting the surgeon with instrumentation. Independently prepares the appropriate instrumentation and materials for use during and on the surgical field, passing instruments, assisting with room turnover, and performing other scrub duties as directed.

Essential Functions

Employees must abide by all Joint Commission Requirements including but not limited to sensitivity to cultural diversity, patient care, patient rights and ethical treatment, safety and security of physical environments, emergency management, teamwork, respect for others, participation in ongoing education and training, communication and adherence to safety and quality programs, sustaining compliance with National Patient Safety Goals, and licensure and health screenings.

Must perform all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the hospital's policies and procedures, including its Service Standards and its Code of Conduct.

  • Provides surgical support to physicians and patients undergoing a surgical procedure in all surgical areas including all complex cases including Trauma, ECMO, Neuro, Transplant, etc.

  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments, supplies and equipment in a timely manner.

  • Adheres to all policies and practices for safe identification and handling of specimens and medications. Has knowledge of medications and its intended use on the field. Is aware of patients' weight and maximum doses of medication when appropriate, Is aware and knows patient allergies.

  • Handles specimens and medications using correct technique and according to departmental policy and procedure.

  • Provides information related to care/preparation of surgical instruments/equipment for sterilization/disinfection procedures.

  • Performs the necessary surgical counts on sharps, small items, instruments and sponges with the circulating nurse prior to opening, during, and after closing the incision.

  • Prepares the surgical field by opening correct supplies and preparing instruments and equipment needed for the scheduled case. Assures all materials are available and in working order and verifies own skill in using equipment correctly.

  • Provides indirect patient care activities such as patient transportation. Assist with standard work and cleaning at completion of procedure.

  • Maintains aseptic technique; actively monitors situations that could lead to a breach in aseptic technique. Communicates and immediately corrects breaks in aseptic technique.

  • Ensures that equipment is functioning properly and immediately notifies appropriate personnel of any problems. Tests equipment prior to use on field. Adheres to the LPCHS unit policies regarding equipment maintenance.

  • Assists with restraining uncooperative/combative patient in a safe manner.

  • Serves as a role model for Surgical Tech I & II. Collaborates on the development and provision of competency-based orientation for scrub role for all services.

  • In conjunction with other team members, provides one (1) in-service/year in a related specialty service.

  • Ensures preference card accuracy in collaboration with Surgeon, Service Lead, and Circulating Nurses.

  • Serves as a liaison to hospital vendors and communicates all issues with Service Lead/ANM.

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.

Education: Completion of an accredited program recognized by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or formal structure surgical program (e.g., military services).

Experience: Four (4) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience

Licensure/Certification: Current American Heart Association (AHA) Certification for Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers.

AND

*Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) from National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) or Tech in Surgery Certification (TS-C) from National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of general safety procedures.

  • Ability to use judgment to determine own work flow.

Pay Range

Compensation is based on the level and requirements of the role.

Salary within our ranges may also be determined by your education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and abilities, as required by the role, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Typically, new team members join at the minimum to mid salary range.

Minimum to Midpoint Range (1.0 FTE): $111,779.20 to $126,786.40
