About the Role:

Responsible for leading a team of protein engineers in the identification and optimization of antibody and other biologics therapeutics, including affinity maturation and improvement of developability. Responsible for leading multiple drug discovery programs, from concept to development candidate. Leads team in optimization of existing processes as well as in the introduction of novel technologies into workflows. Will collaborate closely with research and development analytical teams to ensure appropriate supply of material for analytical development and to ensure projects stay on track. Expected to work closely with multiple project teams to advise on all aspects of biologics discovery and development. Collaborates with CMC, Lead-Optimization, Translational Pharmacology, and other Research teams to develop novel therapies. Strategizes with key stakeholders, including Chemical Development, Product Development, Analytical Development, Clinical Trail Material Supply Chain, QA, and Regulatory CM to advance drug candidates through to clinical development.

Your Contributions (include, but are not limited to):
  • Leads a protein engineering team in discovering, assaying, engineering, reformatting antibodies and biologics

  • Responsible for resource allocation to achieve team and project goals within a defined budget

  • Actively manage and develop a high performing team of protein engineers

  • Develop and deliver scientific presentations, prepare clear and concise technical reports, participate or lead project teams

  • Contributes to development of policies, SOPs, and department strategies

  • Monitor and incorporate the latest developments in the biologic therapeutic space for opportunities that will keep Neurocrine's franchises current and competitive

  • Presents data and strategies at varying levels across the company

  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements:
  • BS/BA in Analytical Chemistry or related discipline and 10+ years of experience in pharmaceutical research or development OR

  • MS/MA in Analytical Chemistry or related discipline and 8+ years of experience

  • PhD in Analytical Chemistry or related discipline and 5+ years of relevant experience; may include postdoc experience

  • Previous managerial / functional management experience also required

  • Industry leading knowledge of state-of-the-art protein engineering concepts and techniques

  • Practical experience with affinity determination methods, and execution of antibody optimization campaigns using directed evolution screening platforms

  • Protein expression, purification and analysis

  • Gene manipulation techniques, including cloning, and use of gene expression manipulation technologies (ASO, siRNA, miRNA, AAV transduction)

  • MAbs/bi specifics - Proven success in the ability to apply protein engineering principles to mAb & BiSp design

  • Knowledge of immunogenicity & antibody effector assays

  • Advanced knowledge of protein structure function relationships

  • Ability to utilize bioinformatics software for protein and gene analyses

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with strong oral and written communication abilities

  • Excellent laboratory skills and proven productivity

  • Method development, validation, and transfer experience in process development a plus

  • Expert knowledge of cross-functional understanding related to drug development

  • Proven strong track record in advanced experimental technologies and their utilization in the drug discovery process

  • Experience with delivery of biologics across the blood brain barrier a plus

  • Excellent critical analysis skills

  • Assimilates data and research findings outside of Neurocrine for application to new scientific projects

  • Maintains broad knowledge of scientific principles and theories and possesses intellectual mastery of one or more scientific areas

  • Develops an understanding of other areas and related dependencies

  • Advanced knowledge and demonstrated ability working with / recommending a variety of laboratory equipment/tools

  • Strong ability to work as part of and lead multiple teams

  • Excellent leadership skills and ability, typically leads multi-level teams and/or indirect teams

  • Excellent computer skills

  • Excellent communications, problem-solving, analytical thinking skills

  • Sees broader picture, impact on multiple programs, teams and/or departments

  • Ability to meet multiple deadlines across a variety of projects/programs, with a high degree of accuracy and efficiency

  • Emerging as an internal thought leader with technical and/or business expertise

  • Applies in-depth knowledge of own area of expertise to solve problems

  • Applies in-depth understanding and may guide others on how own discipline integrates within the department as well as impact to other departments and understands contribution to Neurocrine's achievement of business objectives

  • Experience with cutting edge antibody modeling software and structure-based engineering approaches a plus

    The annual base salary we reasonably expect to pay is $170,100.00-$246,150.00. Individual pay decisions depend on various factors, such as primary work location, complexity and responsibility of role, job duties/requirements, and relevant experience and skills. In addition, this position offers an annual bonus with a target of 30% of the earned base salary and eligibility to participate in our equity based long term incentive program. Benefits offered include a retirement savings plan (with company match), paid vacation, holiday and personal days, paid caregiver/parental and medical leave, and health benefits to include medical, prescription drug, dental and vision coverage in accordance with the terms and conditions of the applicable plans.
