University Facility Services at the University of Arizona is looking for a Plant Operations Stationary Technician II to assist the Central Plants Supervisor for the operations and maintenance of the University of Arizona Central Utility Plants. The central plants include three utility plants which produce and distribute steam and chilled water used to heat and cool the campus, natural gas combustion turbines that produce and distribute electricity and steam to the campus and purified water used by the central plants and some research buildings. Duties & Responsibilities |
- Responsible for managing the electrical peak demand, chillers efficiency and boilers operation.
- Monitors, start and stop the chillers using Trane SC/ES program. Monitors, starts and stops the boilers using Rockwell program. Make necessary adjustment to meet the chilled water system and steam system to meet campus demand.
- Monitors various gauges, meters, pressure and temperature indicators to verify operating conditions of automatically fired boilers, chillers, compressors, motors, combustion turbines and/or related equipment and adjusts controls to specified operating conditions.
- Inspects equipment and correct problems to ensure the safe and economical operation of all central plant equipment.
- Operates computer to question or verify specified operating conditions at various University facilities as required; Initiates corrective action in emergency situations by notifying proper department or dispatching appropriate personnel to site.
- Make chemical analysis of water samples and adjust amounts of chemical used in order to properly protect the equipment.
- Applies safety standards at all times and maintain good housekeeping practices to provide safe working conditions; reports problems affecting plant safety.
- Operate and maintain a gas turbine-generator, chillers and boilers including ancillary equipment and related support equipment.
- Make inspections and adjustment to run the central plant equipment efficient and effective to save energy.
- Responsible for thermal storage using ice for charging the 256 ice tanks during OFF peak hours and deployment of ice using the plate and frame heat exchanger during ON peak hours.
- Prepare logs, charts and reports regarding operating conditions.
- Submit reports to ensure efficient utilization of equipment and adherence to the preventive maintenance program.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Using hand tools and power tools of the trade, knowledge of boiler and/or chiller equipment, operation and maintenance.
- Knowledge of the refrigeration cycle and how it applies to large (> 1000 ton) centrifugal chillers in pump performance characteristics (temperature, flow and pressure).Knowledge of operating and maintaining high volume steam boilers and steam plant components of integrated heating and cooling plant normal and emergency operations, utilizing a thermal energy storage system.

Minimum Qualifications |
- High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
- In addition to the education and experience minimum qualifications, Apprenticeship program, technical training experience required.
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Four years of chiller experience with 500 ton or higher.
- Four years of boiler experience with 35,000 lb./hr. (125# steam) or larger.
- Computer experience using MS Word, Excel, and energy management systems such as: Trane Summit, Johnson Metysis, Barber Coleman, CBSIEBE.
