Job Description: Substation Engineer

Location: Augusta, ME or Rochester, NY

Salary: $74,160 - $105,060

Our client is looking for a Substation Engineer to join their team and work on various Power Grid Utility and Substation Engineering projects. The Substation Engineer will support or lead project teams, focusing on the development of substation designs, including General Arrangements, Equipment Plans, Elevations, Sections, Control House Layouts, Grounding Design, Conduit and Cable Design, and Bill of Materials.

Key Responsibilities:




  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team to develop or review electrical design packages for medium and high voltage substations.



  • Lead physical electrical substation design, including site and equipment layouts, elevations, buswork, ground grids, lightning shielding, and material lists.



  • Perform design studies and apply a solid understanding of physical electrical substation design.



  • Coordinate design activities to meet project schedules, budgets, and quality requirements.



  • Assist with site visits, station walkdowns, and project meetings.



  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, and internal policies, including Safety, Environmental, and Quality Assurance protocols.



  • Select equipment and materials, and prepare specifications for construction work.



  • Deliver accurate electrical designs that meet industry standards and engineering best practices.



  • Review internal and external designs for compliance, design quality, and constructability.



  • Coordinate with multi-discipline project team members on design activities.



  • Provide construction support, including resolving site queries, attending site meetings, and performing site inspections during the construction phase.



  • Maintain thorough project documentation, including engineering studies, design packages, and as-built information.



  • Foster strong working relationships with internal teams such as other engineering disciplines, Drafting, and Project Management.



  • Mentor and guide junior engineers within the department.




Qualifications:




  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.



  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in substation engineering.



  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration preferred.



  • Proficiency in AutoCAD.



  • Prior utility consulting experience is a plus.



  • Strong client focus and customer service skills.



  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and oral.



  • Knowledge of industry standards, including the National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), and IEEE.



  • Ability to work independently and within a team, taking ownership of projects.
