Job Description: Protection & Controls Engineer
Location: Rochester, NY or Orange, CT
Salary: $74,160 - $105,060 Our client is looking for a Protection & Controls (P&C) Engineer to join their team and contribute to various Power Substation and P&C Engineering projects. This role requires working independently on fast-paced, technically complex design projects. The Protection & Controls Engineer will support or lead substation engineering project teams, developing one-line diagrams, relay one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, control house panel layouts, relay selection, SCADA design, bills of materials, and cable schedules. A hybrid work schedule may be considered depending on location. Key Responsibilities:
Work with a multi-disciplinary team to develop reliable and efficient electrical design packages for medium and high voltage substations.
Coordinate design activities to meet project schedules, budgets, and quality requirements to ensure successful project completion.
Assist with site visits, station walkdowns, project estimating, and meetings.
Ensure design activities comply with applicable codes, standards, and internal policies, including Safety, Environmental, and Quality Assurance procedures.
Design electrical substation facilities, including one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, wiring, interconnections, P&C calculations, and reports.
Prepare specifications for materials, equipment, and construction work.
Deliver accurate and thorough electrical designs that meet industry standards and engineering best practices.
Review internal and external designs for compliance with codes, design quality, and constructability.
Coordinate design activities with multi-discipline project teams.
Provide construction support, resolving site queries, attending site meetings, and performing site inspections during the construction phase.
Maintain complete project documentation, including engineering studies, calculations, design packages, and as-built requirements.
Build and maintain strong relationships with internal teams, including engineering disciplines, Drafting, and Project Management.
Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers within the department.
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
Minimum of 2 years of experience in P&C electrical design.
Professional Engineer (PE) registration or eligibility for registration is preferred.
Experience with IEC61850/Goose Messaging.
Proficiency in AutoCAD.
Knowledge of industry standards, including the National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), and IEEE.
Strong knowledge of modern power systems, power system protection, and transmission & distribution systems.
Prior utility or utility consulting experience is a plus.
Strong client focus.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and oral.
