Job Description: Lead Substation Engineer
Location: Rochester, NY or Binghamton, NY
Salary: $96,820 - $140,080 Our client is seeking a Lead Substation Engineer to join their team and lead various Power Utility and Substation Engineering projects. The Lead Substation Engineer will support or lead substation engineering project teams, focusing on the development of substation designs, including General Arrangements, Equipment Plans, Elevations, Sections, Control House Layouts, Grounding Design, Conduit and Cable Design, and Bills of Materials. Key Responsibilities:
Lead and collaborate with a multi-discipline team to develop or review electrical design packages for medium and high voltage substations.
Oversee substation physical electrical design, including site and equipment layouts, elevations, buswork, ground grids, lightning shielding, and material lists.
Perform design studies and demonstrate a strong understanding of physical electrical substation design.
Coordinate design activities to meet project schedules, budgets, and quality requirements, ensuring successful project completion.
Assist in site visits, station walkdowns, project estimating, and project meetings.
Ensure design activities comply with applicable codes, standards, and internal policies such as Safety, Environmental, and Quality Assurance procedures.
Select equipment and materials and prepare specifications for material, equipment, and construction work.
Deliver accurate and thorough electrical designs that meet industry standards and engineering best practices.
Review internal and external designs for code compliance, design quality, and constructability.
Coordinate design activities with other project team members.
Provide construction support, including resolving site queries, attending site meetings, and performing site inspections during the construction phase.
Maintain thorough project documentation, including engineering studies, design packages, and as-built requirements.
Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal teams, including engineering disciplines, Drafting, and Project Management.
Mentor and provide guidance to junior engineers within the department.
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution.
Minimum of 5 years of experience in substation engineering, particularly in Senior/Lead roles.
Professional Engineer (PE) registration is preferred.
Proficiency in AutoCAD.
Prior utility consulting experience is a plus.
Strong client focus and customer service skills.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills, both written and oral.
Knowledge of industry standards, including the National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), and IEEE.
Ability to work independently and in a team, taking ownership of projects.
