At Port Newark Container Terminal, the Health, Safety and Sustainability (HS&S) Manager provides support and guidance to the operations through the participation in the development, implementation, and enforcement of safety and health programs that support the enterprise strategic safety and health plans ensuring compliance with all federal, state and local regulations.

Essential Duties:



  • Participate in the development and implementation of HS&S Standards and communicates Best Practice Procedures throughout the business unit.
  • Train new hires in the HS&S portion of the new hire orientation program.
  • Work with key stakeholders to deliver tangible improvements in HS&S performance.
  • Monitor and coordinate "Best Practice" Program in the Terminal to facilitate continuous improvement.
  • Provide direction for Management Team to ensure that safety and security standards are met.
  • Provide guidance to the accident/incident investigation teams ensuring that all accidents/incidents are properly reported, documented and investigated.
  • Monitor the execution and effectiveness of corrective action working with Terminal Management, ILA labor and the appropriate Regulatory Organizations.
  • Serve as Management Security Officer (MSO) and participate in regular safety and security audits at the site to ensure compliance with Company and Regulatory requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with and reporting of the findings of any of the audits mentioned above. Work with Terminal Management to ensure discrepancies and documented, corrected and effective.
  • Work with Terminal Management to ensure that communications between Security Guard staff and Terminal Operations staff is adequate and effective.
  • Monitor all labor and third party contractor costs incurred by the HS&S Department.
  • Participate in periodic financial reviews as required including cost reduction initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications:



  • 4 year college degree in Health/Safety and/or Environment or a related discipline is preferred but not essential.
  • 5+ years of experience working preferably within the ports industry - or a similar industrial environment or related industry experience may be considered as equivalent to HS&E specific degree.
  • 5+ years of experience leading a team or in a managerial role.
  • Requires the ability to obtain and maintain a TWIC Card issued by the Department of Homeland Security.
  • Requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Port Access Card issued by the NJ State Police.
  • A valid Driver's License in good standing is required.


    Preferred Qualifications:



    • CPR and First Aid Certified
    • Broad understanding of all matters related to Environmental, Health, and Safety.
    • Demonstrated capacity to lead a team and cultural change initiatives, including experience interacting with union representation, labor, and various levels of management.


    • Ability to build and lead teams comprising of members from various departments and/or organizations.
    • Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state OSHA, U.S. Coast Guard and other applicable codes and regulations.
    • Knowledge of terminal, stevedore and vessel operations and equipment, physical and operations security.
    • Knowledge of related union contracts.
    • Knowledge of safety management practices and procedures, including accident investigation and reporting, hazardous materials standards, chemical protective standards, blood borne pathogens standard, ergonomic hazards, and the like.
    • Knowledge of fire prevention standards, oil spill containment procedures, emergency response methods, respiratory protection, and personal protective equipment requirements.
    • Requires good leadership, negotiation, and influencing skills.
    • Previous auditing experience with the ability to investigate and analyze results.
    • Effective and strong verbal and written communication skills; confident, self-manager.
    • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and governmental regulations.
    • Knowledge of cost analysis techniques.
    • Must be computer literate; proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
    • Excellent interpersonal and time management skills & abilities.
    • Knowledge and ability to investigate accidents and incidents, identify root causes, and drive corrective measures.
    • Must have the ability to conduct safety meetings.


    Working Conditions:



    • Frequent walking, standing, bending, occasional sitting.
    • The ability to access ships, cranes, terminal yard and office space.
    • The ability to use a computer/keyboard.
    • The ability to work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions.
    • The ability to work in an environment with moving objects and machinery.
    • The environment may be hazardous to persons unable to see or hear fast moving heavy equipment.
