Position Purpose




The Physician Assistant (PA) performs the functions of examining, planning and implementing the health care of assigned patients under a licensed physician's supervision and direction. The PA secures patient histories, performs physical examinations, orders laboratory tests, develops and implements treatment plans, performs diagnostic and treatment procedures, records findings, and provides patient education and counseling to enhance urgent care effectiveness.

The incumbent supports the Mission, Vision and Values of Renown Health, and ensures that services provided are efficient, effective and consistent with the goals and policies of Renown Regional Medical Center.

Evidence- based PA practice along with critical thinking skills, are required to provide optimal and safe patient care. The incumbent interacts with internal and external contacts, exercises sound judgment, and decision making.




Nature and Scope




The PA is a specialty health care provider who provides medical services to individuals and families. In addition to diagnosing and managing episodic and chronic illnesses, PAs emphasize health promotion and disease prevention. Teaching and counseling individuals, families, and groups are a major part of nurse practitioners role.

The incumbent must provide optimal patient care through assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of adult and geriatric patients and families. The PA must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based upon physical, motor/sensory, psychosocial, and safety appropriate to the age of the patient served.

Supervisor:

1. All entries in the medical record (with the exception of the Discharge Summary) as permitted under Nature and Scope, or in the specific Appendix, must be cosigned by the supervising physician within the next calendar day.

The Discharge Summary must be cosigned by the supervising physician in the time frame specified by the Medical Staff Rules & Regulations.

2. Patient rounds made by a PA shall not be considered as fulfilling requirements for Medical Staff member patient rounds.

3. The Physician Assistant must at all times comply with the provisions of Nevada Revised Statute and other regulations that set for the practice of a Physician Assistant in the State of Nevada.

4. The supervising physician is responsible for the action of the Physician Assistant at all times.

5. The first 20 charts will be reviewed by the Department Chief or his designee for compliance with this Scope of Practice, hospital policies, and the community standard of care.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Accountability for conduct consistent with the Renown Health Corporate Culture Statement.

* Accountability and ethical standards within guidelines of professional organizations.

* Knowledge of Policies and Procedures for the areas of the Medical Group within which the PA will function.

* Documentation of skills must be provided related to:

o Systematic physical, psychological and social assessment of the health status of individuals and families.

o Analysis of data and identification of problems and formulation of collaborative plan of care with physician that provides continuity of health care for patients.

o Provision of instruction and counseling to individuals and families of environment to support health

o Collaborating with supervising physician to plan for alterations of environment to support health care.

o Carrying out defined portion of the collaborative plan of care limited to those functions approved by the privileging process.

When direct patient care is provided, he/she is accountable for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of Neonatal, Pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients and families in an urgent care setting. The incumbent demonstrates the ability to work with patient's physical, motor/sensory adaptation, cognitive, and psychosocial needs specific to the population being served, and meets standards of quality as measured by the Unit/Department age specific competency standards.

It is common to encounter potential hazards in the healthcare environment. Some of these hazards could include, but are not limited to: radiation, toxic chemicals, biological hazards, heat, noise, dust and stress. Renown Health has a Safety Management Program in place to address these issues.

The PA will:

* Be responsible for the setting of clinical quality standards and seeing that they are adhered to.

* Work effectively with all inpatient services to see that operations integrate effectively.

* Must have a thorough understanding of all clinical providers within the medical group structures.

* Demonstrate effective communication skills and be able to effectively work with other community care providers and Renown staff.

* Works with leadership and medical directors and physicians to effectively manage patient care in order to meet Mission, Vision and Values.

* Work with the leadership to ensure productivity and profitability for all operations.

* Accountable for leading staff to assume accountability for decisions and actions for patient care in the unit in accordance with Federal and State requirements and organizational goals.

* Participate in the growth and development of the urgent care program.

* Order tests, initiate or perform selected diagnostics or procedures in accordance with existing protocol approved by the appropriate specialty Department and/or Section.

* Render emergency medical treatment of patients when required.

This position does provide patient care.

Minimum Qualifications

Name Description
Education: Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing and speaking English. Graduate of an accredited physician assistant program.
Experience:
License(s): Ability to obtain and maintain a State Board of Medical Examiners license. Credential through Renown's Medical Staff and/or Payor Credentialing, as applicable. Nevada State Board of Pharmacy License Certification from a National Credentialing Board.
Certification(s): Current BLS by The American Heart Association standards.
Computer / Typing: Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computers skills necessary to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.
