Safety Coordinator

Answering to the Director of Safety for the Staten Island Ferry with a wide latitude for independent decision making, plans, develops, installs and is responsible for performs testing, analysis and inspection of Ferry Division work sites in efforts to identify, monitor and mitigate physical, biological, and environmental hazards for employees and passengers. Performs related work

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS:
Provides direct supervision and guidance to safety officers for these projects. Additionally, he provides support, guidance and project recommendations to the Ferry Division Environmental Coordinator and SMS Manager. Utilizes experience and assistance from DOTOSH Staff and other scientific resources when mitigating research problems. Provides direct supervision and guidance to safety officers for related daily tasks and projects. Works closely with DOTOSH and City-Vendors to provide inputs from Ferry Division as related to occupational safety projects and topics. An active participant in NYCDOT agency meetings coordinated to review agency safety concerns related to physical, biological, and environmental hazards and concerns. Coordinates entry, update and close-out of Ferry Division event tracking system events to include root cause identification and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.

PREFERRED SKILLS:
1.Previous occupational safety experience working in the maritime and ship repair / maintenance industry.
2.Proven ability in independent thinking and supervisory experience is highly desirable.
3.Ability to communicate, both verbal and written, technical issues in lay terms so that non-technical people can understand.
4.Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook / Microsoft Office Suite

WORK LOCATION: 1 Bay Street, Staten Island, NY 10301
HOURS/SHIFT: 35 hours/Monday-Friday

TWIC Requirement: Once selected for employment at the Staten Island Ferry, federal regulations require that the applicant must either undergo a federal background check as part of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program or already possess a TWIC. CITY RESEARCH SCIENTIST - 21744

1. For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health.
To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:
1. A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or
2. A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above.
