Position Summary |
This is supervisory field and office police work.
Work involves responsibility for assisting the shift commander on patrols, investigations, and the performance of special duties of comparable responsibility. An employee allocated to this class of work frequently participates in the work performed by subordinate officers and acts for supervisor during supervisor's absence. New assignments are accompanied by specific instructions, but regularly assigned duties are performed with considerable independence. Work is reviewed through inspection and oral and written reports. |
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies |
Extensive knowledge of standard police practices and techniques.
Extensive knowledge of controlling laws and ordinances, particularly the laws of arrest and evidence.
Knowledge of the campus and surrounding geographic area.
Knowledge of the principles and techniques of interrogation.
Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinates as well as conduct training classes.
Ability to deal firmly and courteously with subordinates and the public under stress conditions.
Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively, and to determine proper course of action to be taken.
Ability to speak and write effectively.
Ability to meet specific physical requirements that may be established by competent authority.
Skill in the use and care of firearms.
Skill in first aid training. |

Inspects the equipment and appearance of subordinate officers; assigns police officers to patrol areas; relays and explains special orders and information; checks police officers' performance in the field; gives advice and assistance when necessary.
Reviews and assigns investigation cases; reviews investigation reports; confers with officers regarding case problems; assists in the performance of more difficult investigative work.
Supervises subordinate personnel engaged in the preparation and maintenance of various records, reports, and related materials; reviews records and reports submitted by other divisions for completeness and conformance to regulations.
Prepares and coordinates public relations programs; speaks before student organizations, parent groups, and related organizations.
Performs the duties of a superior officer in the absence of the superior. |
