Director of Enterprise Risk Management

The Director of Enterprise Risk Management provides primary leadership of the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) process at the University of Illinois System and is an advisor to the System Executive Risk Management Council. Responsible for the leadership, innovation, and management necessary to identify, evaluate, facilitate mitigation, and monitor the University System's enterprise risks, which could have a dramatic impact on the ability of the system to satisfy its core missions. This necessarily involves significant interactions with the Board of Trustees and the highest levels of university and campus administration, and across a broad spectrum of mission areas.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Create/maintain an environment of transparency and open communication in order to foster mutually beneficial relations between the ERM unit and the universities.
2. Promote a risk-aware culture that leads to all University System stakeholders carrying out their respective duties in a manner that recognizes and incorporates uncertainty.
3. Interact regularly with System Offices and university executive and senior leadership to afford holistic identification and assessment of material risks facing the System; facilitate the development of potential mitigation strategies for critically impacting risks through collaboration with risk owners.
4. Interact regularly with the Board of Trustees. Support the Board of Trustees and System / university leadership on matters of enterprise risk by providing intelligence on risk and risk strategies.
5. Provide leadership and support to the System Executive Risk Management Council. Facilitate and coordinate the activities of System-wide task forces and related risk committees formed to support the Enterprise Risk management process.
6. Formulate, establish and implement policies, procedures and guidelines related to the mission of the ERM unit. Guide the development and implementation of enterprise risk policies for the System; support the development and maintenance of risk tolerance policies specific to certain units or risk areas; facilitate development and maintenance of an enterprise-wide appetite statement.
7. Establish/sustain effective, efficient and creative organization within the ERM unit.
8. Develop and mentor employees in order for them to achieve professional success.
9. Lead major initiatives of the ERM unit.
10. Professionally manage relationships with external parties/advisors/providers. Be an aggressive advocate for positions that are favorable to the university system in negotiations with those parties.
11. Provide support to university stakeholders in risk matters, as appropriate. Make customer service a priority.
12. Provide leadership and professional expertise for Enterprise Risk Management to afford holistic identification and assessment of strategic enterprise risks.
13. Lead the annual Enterprise-Wide Risk Assessment as a valuable governance tool for leadership and the Board of Trustees.
14. Provide strategic direction for improvement and value for the overall Enterprise Risk Management Process.
15. Promote to make Enterprise Risk Management at the University of Illinois System a program respected by other institutions of higher education.
16. Foster a progressive risk culture across all University venues, where risk and uncertainty are embraced and used to the University System's advantage.
17. Perform other duties and responsibilities appropriate for the Director of Enterprise Risk Management.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Bachelor degree in business, finance, accounting, engineering, or related field
Preferred:
Masters degree in related field.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE
Required:
1. Ten years professional work experience in a complex organization, preferably in higher education.
2. Demonstrated enterprise risk management skills.
3. Ability to effectively direct and oversee program activities to ensure established objectives/goals are achieved.
4. Excellent organizational abilities and multi-tasking skills to produce accurate, detail-oriented work while meeting stringent deadlines and responding to matters of urgency.
5. Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with hedging and financial derivative products.
6. Strong analytical and problem solving skills to address/resolve complex issues.
7. Excellent verbal and written communications skills to effectively interact with University and departmental officials/staff.
8. Ability to work independently, and to exercise good judgment and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.
9. Exceptional interpersonal skills to develop and maintain good working relationships at all levels of the organization.
10. Ability to interpret, apply, and/or develop policies and procedures.
11. Demonstrated leadership and teamwork skills.
12. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred:
1. Broad working knowledge of the University of Illinois.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
This is a Full Time academic professional position. The expected start date is 6/2/2025. Sponsorship for Work Authorization is not available for this position.

The budgeted salary range for the position is $100,000.00 - 130,000.00. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
