Job Summary

Under general supervision, provide fish culture maintenance at an experimental fish rearing facility located near Byron, CA. Perform all duties associated with fish culture and with a development of refuge population for listed fish species. Participate in fish-tagging and spawning operations for the refugial population and research projects. Assist with, or initiate, research studies. Record and summarize data collected annually. Conduct maintenance, design, modification and construction of various aquatic culture systems and related equipment. Participate in emergency response and animal life support situations associated with facility power outages, equipment or system failure. Assist with scheduling, organization and communication of outsourced contractors and service providers. Assist
with laboratory organization, i.e. drafting standard operating procedures, review of material safety data sheets.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • No Minimum Education required.
  • Three years of experience working with Delta Smelt and/or Longfin Smelt. Experience in intensive culture of all life stages of Delta smelt.
  • Experience in basic construction, carpentry and PVC plumbing.
  • Experience in monitoring water quality parameters and knowledge of their importance to fish health.
  • Familiarity with fish diseases and ability to determine proper medication and doses for disease treatment.
  • Knowledge of equipment associated with bio-filtered recirculating fish rearing systems such as pumps, mechanical filters, ultra-violet filters and water conditioning units.
  • Computer skills to catalog and summarize data.
  • Knowledge of UC Davis Policy and Procedures related to animal care.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in spawning fish and following specific genetic management plan. Experience reviewing and preparing new standard operating procedures.
  • Experience in spawning fish and following specific genetic management plan.
  • Experience training staff on intensive fish husbandry techniques.

The Department of Wildlife, Fish, & Conservation Biology is a dedicated group of scientists and students interested in research and training in the fields of biology, ecology, and conservation of all wildlife and fish species, and to resolution of human-wildlife conflicts. As such, we are unique within the University of California. We pursue our mission through targeted research as well as integrated and dynamic teaching at both graduate and undergraduate levels. Our students emerge with a solid biological foundation on which they superimpose training in the ecology and management of wildlife and fish in natural as well as human-altered environments. They are established and emerging leaders in wildlife and fish biology, ecology, conservation, and management, with jobs as private consultants, agency wildlife or fish biologists, zoo biologists, and wildlife veterinarians, among others. This position is located off the UC Davis campus near Byron, CA. Work occasional overtime, weekend shifts and holidays to meet operational needs, sometimes on short notice. Vacations are restricted during spring spawning period. Work shift is 6am - 2:30pm. Indoor/outdoor work environment. Working in all weather conditions.
