Job Summary

The Unit Director of Patient Access leads people who coordinate regional patient referral, phone triage, and transport of critically ill children to Benioff Children's Hospital inpatient areas at Mission Bay and Oakland across all shifts. The Unit Director of Patient Access participates in initiatives within the UCSF Health related to strategic priorities that are supported through efficient patient acceptance and throughput. The incumbent is responsible for the alignment of departmental staffing resources, bed planning and availability, and patient flow from to areas of Benioff Children's Hospitals (e.g. Emergency Departments, Operating Rooms, Direct Admits, BCH SF/OAK Integrated Access Center admissions, etc.).

The Unit Director of Patient Access, Flow, and Staffing identifies, resolves and escalates patient flow bottlenecks and has a consistent and visible presence to collaborate with hospital administrators, Case Management, Hospitality, nursing staff and MD's in the event of high capacity overflow to resolve bottlenecks and improve patient flow.

The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations is required.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $253,900 - $269,400 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Unit Director of Patient Access, Flow, and Staffing facilitates and coordinates the BCH SF/OAK Integrated Pediatric Access Center, Mission Bay Helipad, Pediatric Medical Transport Team, Peri-Operative Services, Centralized Patient Placement RNs, Emergency Rooms, Direct Admissions, Nurse Staffing Office, Nursing Supervisors, Registry Staff, UCSF Physicians, Nursing Units, Case Management, In-house Patient Transport and Hospitality to facilitate patient flow and timely placement of patients. Maintains knowledge base as subject matter expert for patient flow and interfacility transport policies, processes and software systems.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in nursing required
  • Minimum 2-years in hospital supervisor role and/or coordination and dispatch of transport team
  • Recent hospital management or administrative experience in an acute hospital environment for a minimum of 3-5 years
  • Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • BLS
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • Knowledge of Epic/Apex
  • Knowledge of government program regulations, MediCal, MediCare, CCS, COBRA, EMTALA
  • Demonstrated leadership/management skills
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in strategies to improve patient flow, nurse staffing and general hospital operations
  • Strong working knowledge and high-level participation in relevant healthcare information technology, patient care workflows and processes
  • Proficient experience with Word/Windows computer programs
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications


  • Minimum of 3-years pediatric critical care experience
  • Master's degree in nursing or relevant area preferred

License/Certification


  • Registered Nurse in the State of California
  • BLS
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
