Job Description

The Diane Filion Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence (CAFE) at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) is hiring an Instructional Designer III to lead and support strategic instructional design work across the university. CAFE is UMKC's hub for faculty development and instructional innovation, serving all academic units with a commitment to inclusive, effective, and engaging teaching.

The Instructional Designer III provides expert-level consultation in instructional design, leads high-impact projects, and serves as a mentor to other instructional designers. This position plays a leadership role in developing and advancing instructional quality initiatives, aligning course design with university priorities, and helping faculty integrate research-informed, student-centered teaching practices.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a strategic instructional partner to faculty and academic leaders across disciplines in the design, revision, and enhancement of online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced courses.
  • Lead complex course redesigns and faculty development initiatives that advance instructional quality and inclusive learning practices.
  • Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and current accessibility standards to ensure equitable, high-impact course experiences.
  • Facilitate advanced professional development offerings-such as workshops, consultations, and communities of practice-focused on effective and innovative teaching.
  • Conduct and coordinate comprehensive course quality reviews, and support continuous improvement processes in collaboration with academic units.
  • Mentor and onboard other instructional designers, contributing to the growth and cohesion of the CAFE instructional design team.
  • Stay informed about emerging educational tools, pedagogical frameworks, and data-informed instructional models that influence course design.
  • Collaborate with partners in Academic Technology Services, Student Disability Services, and the Provost's Office to align faculty support with institutional goals.
  • Represent CAFE in university-wide projects and contribute to strategic initiatives focused on faculty excellence and student success.

Work Environment:
This position is based in Kansas City, Missouri, and supports hybrid and remote work arrangements. The Instructional Designer III reports to the Director of CAFE and collaborates with faculty and staff throughout UMKC to improve the quality of instruction and student outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in instructional design, education, or a related field-or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least 5 years of relevant professional experience in instructional design, faculty development, or digital pedagogy
  • Demonstrated experience leading instructional design projects and mentoring others
  • Expertise in instructional design models (e.g., backward design, ADDIE) and learning theories
  • Deep understanding of accessibility, UDL, and inclusive course design practices
  • Familiarity with learning management systems (e.g., Canvas), authoring tools, and instructional media
  • Excellent facilitation and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate across functional units
  • Awareness of how data-informed instructional models and emerging technologies shape teaching and learning
Anticipated Hiring Range

Up to $68,815 commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity.
