Job Description

The Diane Filion Center for Advancing Faculty Excellence (CAFE) at the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) is hiring an Instructional Designer II to support faculty in designing and improving online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced courses. CAFE is UMKC's hub for instructional innovation and faculty development, serving all academic units with a commitment to inclusive, effective, and engaging teaching.

As part of the instructional design team at CAFE, the Instructional Designer II works directly with faculty to enhance course design, integrate evidence-based teaching practices, and support student success. This position combines pedagogical consultation with technical knowledge of instructional tools and plays a key role in improving the quality and accessibility of learning experiences across the university.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner with faculty to design, revise, and enhance online, hybrid, and technology-enhanced courses aligned with best practices in teaching and learning.
  • Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and accessibility standards to ensure inclusive and equitable course environments.
  • Facilitate workshops, consultations, and other professional learning opportunities focused on instructional design and effective teaching.
  • Conduct course quality reviews and provide faculty with constructive, actionable feedback.
  • Collaborate with partners in Academic Technology Services, Student Disability Services, and academic units to support integrated instructional planning.
  • Stay current with trends in instructional design, online learning, and educational technology; share findings with faculty and team members.
  • Contribute to CAFE's campus-wide programming and initiatives that promote instructional excellence and student-centered learning.

Work Environment:
The position is based in Kansas City, Missouri, and offers hybrid and remote work options. Instructional Designers at CAFE work collaboratively with colleagues across the university to advance instructional quality and faculty support.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience, and at least 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in instructional design, education, or a related field
  • Familiarity with instructional design models (e.g., ADDIE, backward design) and learning theories
  • Experience using learning management systems (e.g., Canvas) and course development tools
  • Knowledge of accessibility guidelines (e.g., WCAG 2.1, Section 508) and UDL best practices
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build collaborative relationships with faculty
  • Capacity to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment
  • Awareness of how emerging instructional technologies and data-informed models influence course design and faculty development practices
Anticipated Hiring Range

Up to $56,000 commensurate with experience, education, and internal equity.
