Job Overview

Summary

The Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Specialist is new to the ECMO specialty. The ECMO Specialist provides extracorporeal life support services to patients who require mechanical support for respiratory, cardiac and/or circulatory failure while also training and orienting to more complex aspects of patient care within the ECMO department. The ECMO Specialist also provides direct patient nursing care by floating into one or more of the following areas: Acute Care, Critical Care. Builds and maintains relationships with multidisciplinary healthcare providers.

The ECMO Program at Children's Colorado is comprised of a dedicated team of nearly 30 nurses and respiratory therapists called ECMO specialists. These specialists are trained by industry experts to monitor the ECMO circuit, one-on-one, at a patient's bedside. We treat approximately 80-90 kids per year in need of ECMO services. In addition to the ECMO specialists, Children's Colorado has an advanced clinical team specially trained in ECMO support. This team consists of dedicated ICU doctors, surgeons, nurses and perfusionists who oversee the program. This oversight includes specialized clinical and technical training, continued program development, investigation of new technology, and research to provide the best possible care for kids in need of heart and lung recovery.

This position is eligible for relocation assistance, if relocating from 100 miles or greater.

Job Status: full time, 36 hours per week, eligible for benefits
Shift: Rotating days and nights (8 weeks days, 8 weeks nights)

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in nursing or bachelor's degree in respiratory care/AS in Respiratory Care with a Bachelor's in an associated Health related field.
  • Experience: Three (3) years of critical care experience, at least two (2) of those years in pediatric critical care.
  • Equivalency: Associate degree in respiratory therapy or respiratory Care plus two (2) years of clinical experience may substitute for the bachelor's degree.
  • Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) or current Respiratory Therapist in the State of Colorado.
  • Certification(s):

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential functions. These examples do not include all the functions which the employee may be expected to perform.

  • Maintains and manages the ECMO circuit in accordance with hospital standards. Manages disruptions in ECMO flow during planned and emergent disruptions,
  • Manages patient anticoagulation and fluid balance according to departmental guidelines.
  • Delivers patient and family centered care in one or more clinical areas while incorporating developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive, evidence-based care practices and methodologies. Anticipates and responds to changes in patient outcomes in the provision of care.
  • Communicates and advocates patient values, preferences and expressed needs as part of the implementation of care plan, evaluation of care and assessment of patient/family learning needs.
  • Build and maintains strong working relationships with multidisciplinary healthcare providers to provide individualized patient/family care and education while minimizing risks to the patient during transitions of care.
  • Ensures compliance with clinical policies, procedures, and best practices in order to minimize the risk of harm to patients and providers.
  • implements evidence-based practice to improve the quality of care provided to patients/families.
  • Attends all department specific required trainings and meetings.

Salary Information
Pay is dependent on applicant's relevant experience.
Hourly Rate of Pay: $42.27 - $63.41
