Derivatives Trader
- Part of a central Derivatives team that manages all commodity derivatives trading for the Group including Base Metals, Ferrous and Precious Metals, Freight, Fuel as well as Carbon derivatives

- For Illinois-based roles the expected annual salary range is $117,400 - 172,200
About the role Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs. We are looking for a Chicago-based Derivatives Trader to contribute towards expansion in our activities. This role offers a great opportunity to engage with multiple stakeholders and participate in developing the pathway towards increased activities in the trading space for Rio Tinto Commercial Reporting to the Senior Trader, Iron Ore, you will be responsible for the optimisation of the sales portfolio and growth in activities:
- Collaborate with the Physical teams to improve effectiveness of hedging and processes around price risk management
- Provide subject matter expertise on financial markets and price risk management to help physical, market analysis & risk teams in Chicago develop risk management approaches & generate value
- Lead or facilitate the development of associated models, tools and systems.
- In collaboration with others in Chicago and Singapore, act as RTs eyes and ears in the financial markets working closely with physical sales and integrated trading teams to identify, monitor and capture pricing dislocations between physical and financial markets e.g. Arbs, spreads, warrants.
- Contribute to and develop market view and generate value-adding insights through regular reporting.
Derivatives trading:
- The incumbent will be covering US hours for mainly base metals derivatives trading and will contribute to the sales team and derivatives team meeting their P&L targets across joint books;
- Coordinate daily with the Singapore based derivatives traders to ensure a smooth transition between time zone;
- Provide advisory to new business requests with implications for derivatives trading, including socialization and education over trade ideas.
- Lead or facilitate the setting up of new derivatives suitable for the organization
- Champion price risk management ideas, engage for trading ideas and execute effectively, generating value.
Business Growth:
- When relevant and based on bandwidth, work closely with various subject matter experts and leaders within Integrated Trading on projects related to the development of trading within Commercial.
About you To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
- 5-10 years of experience in Commodity Derivatives within a Physical Trading House, a Bank, Brokerage or a Corporate in the Mining, Energy or Grain sector with experience with complex instruments such as financial or physical options;
- Experience in managing derivatives books with targets and risk allocation will be a plus;
- Understanding risks associated with trading (e.g. price risk, compliance risks);
- Experience with various instruments on exchanges and over the counter globally.
- Exposure to physical commodities and physical settlement of commodity derivatives would be a plus;
- Strong EQ, influencing and interpersonal skills as well as positive attitude towards working collaboratively and solving business problems as part of a global and diverse team;
- Entrepreneurship: demonstrating curiosity and strong problem-solving abilities
- Flexibility around work schedule to work and support different time zones.
