Position description

Junior Specialist - Hernandez lab

Under the supervision of the principal investigator, the incumbent will participate in research projects directed towards understanding the effects of the microbiome on musculoskeletal tissues. The incumbent will perform studies in mice including procedures, will process tissues for histopathology, culture microbial populations and analyze 'omics data associated with the microbiome. The incumbent will assist with sample preparation and analysis of biological specimens. The incumbent will order supplies, perform general laboratory maintenance; assist and prepare laboratory equipment/supplies/chemicals for projects assigned by principal investigator, Dr. Christopher Hernandez. The incumbent will stock and maintain laboratory supplies. The incumbent will participate in managing the mouse colony, genotyping of mice, and the associated recordkeeping. The incumbent will maintain accurate record of experiments, collect data, perform data entry, and maintain databases. Preparation of reports, manuscripts and other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Required Qualifications:



  • BA/BS degree in Bioengineering/Biomedical or a bioscience field by the time of hire.
  • Topics covered in prior education include but are not limited to use of software tools analysis of 'omics data, sterile lab technique.
  • PC Computer knowledge and experience at intermediate level.
  • Highly organized with good attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.
  • Flexible, good interpersonal skills, ability to keep professional manners even under pressure.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to learn new methods/techniques.
  • Attention to detail is required throughout most procedures.
  • Ability to coordinate workflow and priorities and manage time effectively.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Excellent oral/written communication and analytical skills.
  • Demonstrated a record of excellent attendance and reliability.
  • Ability to work independently and to identify the next steps in required tasks to meet goals set by supervising faculty members.
  • Careful attention to detail.
  • Maintain a detailed laboratory notebook of experiments done on a daily basis.
  • Highly organized with good attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a research team.

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience with microscopy.
  • Experience with computational tools used to analyze 'omics data.


See Table 24B for the salary range for this position. A reasonable estimate for this position is $53,100 - $56,600.
