Job Summary:


The Center for the Advancement of Teaching (CAT) at Temple University promotes the value and practice of excellent teaching that facilitates student learning and growth. CAT's pedagogical and educational technology programs and resources support evidence-based teaching and provide opportunities for faculty and TAs to learn from the experience and expertise of their colleagues. The CAT supports teaching in face-to-face, online, studio, and clinical environments and collaborates with other units on campus that support inclusive academic excellence and student success. The faculty developers, educational technology specialists, digital media specialists, and administrative staff of the CAT support all 17 colleges within Temple University, which include over 4,000 faculty members and teaching assistants in undergraduate, graduate, and professional disciplines.
Reporting to the Associate Director of Inclusion Initiatives, the Accessible Pedagogy Specialist will support efforts to meet updated Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines and improve inclusive teaching grounded in Universal Design for Learning principles in all modalities and contexts at Temple University. The specialist will design and conduct educational development programs aimed at building faculty's understanding of inclusive teaching principles, especially for students with disabilities, but also for students who must navigate other barriers to success. They will conduct one-on-one consultations with faculty, observe classes to assess the effectiveness of the implementation of new teaching practices and provide feedback, and develop resources on accessible pedagogy. The specialist will also work with faculty to support their educational technology needs, especially those related to accessibility and universal design, as needed. The Accessible Pedagogy Specialist will maintain a strong working knowledge of changing practices and legislation in the field of higher education and disability by actively engaging in consuming and contributing to scholarship in the field, as well as professional organizations centered on inclusive teaching and learning. The specialist will advise other members of the CAT staff on best practices for accessibility and universal design for learning and will work collaboratively with them to implement these practices. They will bring their knowledge of assistive technologies to the CAT team to broaden understanding of tools that can support student success. The successful candidate will help support accessible pedagogy efforts in partnership with the Office of Disability Resources Services, Information Technology Services, University Libraries, and others dedicated to inclusive teaching. Will develop a plan in collaboration with Information Technology Services for ensuring continuing compliance with Title II requirements as new faculty and staff join Temple.
The successful candidate will have a deep knowledge of accessible pedagogy and universal design for learning principles. They will be familiar with assistive technologies and educational technologies that lead to more inclusive teaching practices. Ideal candidates will have experience teaching in higher education. They must communicate clearly and persuasively. They must enjoy developing others' knowledge and skills, demonstrate patience with clients needing assistance, and possess strong problem-solving skills. They must avidly seek professional development to ensure continual improvement in their work. Essential to this position is the desire to develop collaborative and supportive relationships with faculty in order to serve their needs and draw them to the services that the center provides. They must demonstrate organizational skills, the willingness to take initiative to get things done, and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks.
This position's primary place of work is on Temple University's main campus, but the candidate may be assigned to the Health Sciences Campus on a rotating basis. This is a hybrid position with three (3) days on campus and two (2) remote, subject to change.

Required Education & Experience:



  • Master's degree and at least three (3) years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience teaching at the university/college level in a face-to-face and/or online classroom environment.


Required Skills & Abilities:



  • Deep knowledge of accessible pedagogy and universal design for learning principles.
  • Working knowledge of assistive technologies and educational technologies that lead to more inclusive teaching practices.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to be patient with faculty who have a range of skills and experience.
  • Demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of current discussions and issues affecting the field
  • Possesses a demonstrated willingness to take initiative, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks.
  • Knowledge of a variety of educational technologies.
  • Effective oral, written communication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience using Learning Management Systems.
  • Ability to occasionally work before/after business hours and/or weekends and at both the Main Campus and Health Science Campus locations.


Preferred:



  • Terminal degree.
  • Scholarship on teaching and learning, on supporting student success, on accessibility, or on other related topics.
