We are looking for an intern who is interested in acoustic design, audio signal processing, product sound tuning, and final product evaluation.

This intern will join the team responsible for ensuring the sound quality of Sony consumer audio products, including headphones, wireless speakers, and sound bars. This team is responsible for both objective and subjective evaluation of sound quality as well as subsequent tuning via mechanical or electrical means to optimize sound quality. This team is also responsible for R&D and prototyping related to consumer audio products. The Audio Engineer Intern would help evaluate the final product including wireless connectivity and audio streaming from consumer devices.

The ideal candidate is one who has a passion for audio and music, and a knowledge of audio recording, production and mixing.

This position is based at Sony Electronics U.S. Headquarters, located in San Diego, CA.

As an intern, you will gain hands-on experience across various areas of Audio Engineering, such as:

1. Acoustic Measurement and Analysis:

  • Assist in setting up and conducting acoustic measurements. Analyze measurement data using tools such as MATLAB, Python, or Excel to support product tuning and validation.

2. Subjective Listening and Product Tuning:

  • Participate in critical listening sessions to evaluate and compareproducts.

  • Contribute subjective feedback to guide tuning adjustments.

  • Support product tuning through collaboration with acoustic and DSP engineers, assisting in implementing mechanical and/or electrical modifications.

3. Wireless Connectivity and Streaming Evaluation

  • Conduct functional testing of wireless audio products (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi) for connectivity reliability and streaming audio quality.

  • Troubleshoot and document issues related to latency, dropout, codec compatibility, and multi-device pairing.

  • Compare performance across a variety of consumer devices (phones, tablets, laptops, etc.)

4. Prototyping and R&D Support

  • Support R&D projects by designing and testing experimental audio prototypes.

  • Document results and prepare findings for team discussion and presentation.

5. Technical Documentation and Reporting

  • Record and summarize test procedures, findings, and recommendations in internal reports.

  • Create clear and concise technical presentations for sharing insights with cross-functional teams.

6. General Support Tasks

  • Assist with benchmarking competitor products.

  • Support the team with ad hoc tasks that may range from mundane to technically challenging, helping the intern build a broad skill set.

Internship Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program studying Mechanical Engineering, Acoustical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field with relevant coursework

  • Experience with sound systems, or at a minimum strong interest in sound systems (Home, Mobile, or Automotive)

  • Knowledge of engineering measurement equipment, hardware, and software (electrical, mechanical, or acoustical)

  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills

  • Willingness to take on a variety of tasks ranging from mundane to challenging

  • Passion for music and/or musician (preferred)
