ABOUT THE ROLE

The role of Crane Operator Instructor involves delivering hands-on and classroom-based training to crane operators, with a strong emphasis on safety, regulatory compliance, and proper techniques for working around high voltage electrical systems. This position plays a critical role in preparing crane operators to perform their duties effectively in complex and potentially hazardous environments. Provide operational support in crane operations to electrical infrastructure projects, including the installation of power lines, transformers, and substation components, ensuring safety, efficiency, and compliance with project specifications and regulatory standards

Essential Functions

  • Deliver comprehensive training on crane operation, focusing on safety protocols, equipment handling, and load control, especially in proximity to high voltage electrical infrastructure
  • Instruct on proper use of crane controls (levers, pedals, and switches) to ensure safe and precise equipment operation
  • Provide detailed instruction on pre-operation inspections, including checks of lifting components and crane mechanisms
  • Train operators identify signs of wear or damage to cables, pulleys, and grappling systems, with emphasis on preventing failures in high-risk environments
  • Teach the best practices for communicating with ground crews using radios and standardized hand signals, particularly in electrically sensitive zones
  • Emphasize site-specific hazards, including minimum approach distances and grounding requirements when operating near energized equipment
  • Demonstrate maintenance techniques such as cleaning, lubrication, and mechanical adjustments to ensure reliable crane performance
  • Educate operators, trainee on interpreting work orders, sequencing operations, and planning lifts to avoid contact with energized systems
  • Simulate realistic field scenarios, including lifting and positioning materials near substations, transmission lines, or other high voltage components
  • Reinforce the importance of grounding procedures, equipment spotting, and coordination with safety personnel
  • Assess trainee performance through practical exercises, written evaluations, and one-on-one feedback
  • Maintain training documentation, certification records, and compliance logs
  • Stay informed on industry standards (ANSI, ASME, OSHA, NFPA 70E, etc.) and incorporate updates into training materials
  • Regular and predictable attendance
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Essential functions of this position are to be performance at a Company-designated office or field location
  • Understand and comply with the Company's Code of Business Conduct and Ethics Policy and other industry-specific professional and ethical standards

ABOUT YOU

Qualifications

  • Advanced certifications in crane operation and safety instruction (e.g., NCCCO) strongly preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on crane operation experience, with demonstrated expertise in environments involving high voltage electrical systems
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Instructional Skills: Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly and adjust instruction methods to meet diverse learning needs
  • Electrical Safety Knowledge: In-depth understanding of safe practices when working near energized conductors and equipment
  • Problem Solving: Skilled in hazard identification, job planning, and real-time risk mitigation
  • Physical Capability: Able to demonstrate field techniques and instruct in outdoor, industrial, or training yard settings

  • Salary $79160-118739 / year
    • Commensurate with experience, paid weekly. Posted salary ranges are made in good faith. MYR Group reserves the right to adjust ranges depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
