Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Police Department is a service agency dedicated to the safety and security of the University community. The Director of Public Safety reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Campus Safety & Risk Management. The delivery of services centers around one primary concern: 'Protecting North Carolina's Future.' This commitment includes the provision of services to the community when crimes occur, as well as the prevention of crime. The employees of the Department of Public Safety continue to work in partnership with the community to deliver the finest possible services available. It is important to recognize that the services provided by this department are in support of a campus that was identified in the Terrorism Assessment Tool used by Orange County as the top designation in Orange County for terrorist attacks. Also, the Smith Center was designated for a site evaluation by the National Guard as part of their assessment of the state for terrorism activity. Emergency and Risk recovery plans are in place to ensure Public Safety's services are not interrupted in the event of natural or man-made disasters. Additional complexities of the Department of Public Safety include a 911 Communications Center, which serves as back-up to Orange County Emergency Management's 911 Communications as the second and only additional point of dispatch countywide. In addition to about 40,000 university students, faculty, and staff, the presence of a major medical center certified a Level 1 Trauma Center and major sporting events increases the population served to millions each year.
Position Summary
This position is responsible for the security at the Ackland Art Museum. The officer will conduct patrols ensuring all doors and windows of the facility have not been compromised. The officer will lock and unlock doors within the facility as necessary and in accordance with post orders. The officer will check the identification of all suspicious persons. The officer will assist employees and guests with escorts, disabled vehicles, all hazards, power outages, heating and cooling problems and report same to UNC Dispatch. The officer is responsible for arriving on time and in full uniform. The Officer should notify supervisors and/or the Security Manager of any problems or incidents that might occur on their shift. This position is one that is necessary to ensure University operations continue uninterrupted during periods of adverse weather and /or other emergency situations, including those that cause the University to close. As such you may be required to report to work according to your usual schedule or upon notification to report outside of your usual work schedule.

Monitor crimes in progress and communicate information to responding officers via UNC Dispatch.
Provide attention to detail. Complete daily reports concerning task and assignments completed during duty hours. Work individually and independently in a generally unsupervised position.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require valid N.C. driver's license.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Must have adequate knowledge in protective, security and enforcement practices. Must have knowledge of the policies, rules and regulations to sufficiently make decisions in unique or unprecedented situations. Assist when requested in creation or review of security policies, rules and regulations applicable to the property being guarded. Communicates regarding issues that require significant judgment or interpretation with Security Supervisors, negotiating and resolving conflicts with the public, university officials, and other stakeholders. Provides adequate training on security, patrol, and enforcement procedures to replacements guards.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Prefer candidates that have law enforcement/security experience; that are familiar with a university setting.
Preferred prior Police or Security experience.
Prefer candidate that is familiar with the UNC - Chapel Hill campus.
Required Licenses/Certifications
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to patrol interior and exterior of facilities on foot. Must be able to climb stairs. Must be able to patrol independently.
Must be able to lift/move 40 lbs.
Campus Security Authority Responsibilities
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
