Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The HDFS Department, one of 9 departments and programs within the School of Health and Human Sciences, is ranked as one of the top HDFS graduate programs in the country. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs (MEd, MS, and PhD) focused on sociocultural contexts within core areas of early childhood education, human development, and family studies.
The Department prepares undergraduate students for careers in non-profit agencies, business, industry and governmental agencies such as early childhood educators, youth service specialists, family advocates, program coordinators, community outreach coordinators, and research assistants/project managers. To provide a strong academic base for undergraduate students who intend to pursue advanced study in child and family sciences. To achieve regional and national recognition for our graduate programs, preparing students for positions in teaching, research, and administration. To enhance our national reputation for faculty research and scholarship, which contribute significantly to existing knowledge in human development, family sciences and related areas.
Position Summary
This position requires in-depth knowledge of activities conducted in an academic department and supports needed for academic programs. It works closely with the department chair in supporting main office activities (i.e., collecting and filing course syllabi, submitting course schedule details, maintaining instructor training information, and planning events), and four program directors in scheduling advisement meetings, supporting graduate student recruitment, tracking graduate applications, maintaining current and alumni graduate student files.

This position manages department purchases, travel budget for faculty and students, processes travel requests, and supports unfunded research project needs. It assists in maintaining the department's website and other areas of departmental communication by developing newsletters, brochures and flyers for the department in conjunction with various faculty.

The position requires excellent problem solving skills including the ability to analyze a complex, unprecedented problem and recommend the best course of action to a program director and department chair. This position engages with various university software applications is often asked to collect and prepare data from multiple locations to create reports.
Minimum Qualifications
HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA OR EQUIVALENCY; OR DEMONSTRATED POSSESSION OF THE COMPETENCIES NECESSARY TO PERFORM THE WORK.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2-3 years of work experience
  • Knowledge of UNCG systems and procedures (Banner Finance, Banner HR, PCard, Purchasing, etc.)
  • Effective communicator, both written and oral. Strong writing skills essential
  • Strong interpersonal, and customer-service skills
  • Willingness and ability to promote a positive work environment
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion in handling confidential materials and matters
  • Excellent knowledge of word processing tools and spreadsheets
  • Attention to detail with an ability to spot grammar, spelling and punctuation errors
