Overview
The School of Environmental and Biological Sciences, located on the George H. Cook Campus, is one of the largest schools of Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey. We pursue excellence in research, teaching, and outreach in areas of study that address the biological spectrum from molecules to ecosystems. Our emphasis is on both the fundamental sciences and the social and human dimensions. We offer 21 undergraduate majors, including plant and animal sciences, microbiology, biotechnology, agriculture and food systems, landscape architecture, food and nutritional sciences, ecology and evolution, marine science and oceanography, environmental sciences and meteorology, human ecology, entomology, and environmental economics.
In addition to instruction in the classroom, field, and laboratory, our students have opportunities for experiential learning on and off campus, including a growing emphasis on international experiences through short- and long-term study abroad. Students also have access to a robust program of applied research and outreach hosted by the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station laboratories, farms, business incubators, and marine stations throughout the state.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Field Researcher IV for the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.

Among the key duties of the position are the following:

  • Assists the cranberry and blueberry breeding program at the Marucci Research Center with field and greenhouse experiments.
  • Data collection and entry, as well as assisting with propagating, planting, harvesting, and maintenance of blueberry and cranberry breeding materials in the field and greenhouse.

Qualifications


Minimum Education and Experience
  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and/or experience is required.
Certifications/Licenses

  • Will be required to have a valid NJ Dep Pesticide Applicator's License.
  • Requires a valid driver's license.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Familiarity with farm tools and equipment, the ability maintain plants, to record and maintain data, and math skills for preparing chemical fertilizer and pesticide solutions.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with supervisor and other lab workers, and have good organizational skills.
  • Must be organized, flexible and ability to multi-task and reorganize tasks depending upon weather or hourly help availability.
  • Must have experience in plant maintenance and propagation, and pest/weed management.
  • Must be able to keep tidy records and labeling of collections of breeding material.
  • Must have knowledge of basic computer applications like Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Field and greenhouse experience in plant science (at least 2 years), especially involving perennial plants preferred.
  • Candidate with a B.S. in Biology; prior plant breeding experience is preferred.

Equipment Utilized

  • Desktop computer with Microsoft Excel.
  • Must have familiarity with propagation, pruning, fertilization and application of herbicides/pesticides utilized in field and greenhouse research.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • The field work can be physically taxing, as well as hot and dirty, greenhouse work can be very hot.
  • Ability to lift 75 lbs.
