The Office of Institutional Planning, Assessment, and Research (
IPAR) is directed by the Associate Provost for
IPAR, who reports to the Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
IPAR facilitates university-wide academic planning, strategic planning, space planning, assessment, and evaluation activities and supports institutional decision-making.
IPAR collects, analyzes, warehouses, and disseminates data about East Carolina University, serving as the University's primary contact with The University of North Carolina System Office, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on College (
SACSCOC), and other external constituencies in meeting the data, reporting, and compliance requirements established by these various agencies/bodies. |
Job Duties |
The Assistant Director of Institutional Research (
ADIR) reports primarily to the Director of Institutional Research (
DIR) and secondarily to the Associate Provost for Institutional Planning, Assessment, and Research (
IPAR). The Assistant Director assumes responsibility for assignments that support the planning, assessment, and research functions in
IPAR; the scope of the position extends from
IPAR to the entire University community. The Assistant Director plays a key role in coordinating data analytics projects and assists the IR Director with day-to-day operations of the unit and provides oversight in their absence.
Research & Analytics - 50% The Assistant Director of Institutional Research (
ADIR) is primarily responsible for the development and coordination of a team-based analytics function that supports the University's mission and strategic initiatives.
- Serve as the project lead and respond to campus-wide requests for research studies (quantitative, qualitative, or mixed method, as appropriate) using institutional data and other publicly available datasets. Collaborate with other IPAR staff and/or campus partners to develop methodology, compile data, and conduct analyses. Interpret, contextualize, visualize, and communicate the results of those studies in forms understandable to many audiences.
- Initiates new research and analytics projects independently to support assessment and decision-making.
- Assist the DIR and Associate Provost in developing and implementing a research agenda that focuses primarily on ECU's student success and enrollment management initiatives and secondarily on ECU's other strategic or operational initiatives as needed.
- Contribute to institutional research and effectiveness literature through publications and presentations internally and externally to ECU.
Research Partnerships & Collaboration - 20%
The
ADIR will cultivate positive and productive relationships with other departments and serve as a resource for units and university-wide workgroups in need of statistical and/or research expertise.
- Serve as an IR representative on campus-wide workgroups and provide analytics support. These efforts may include formulating research questions, integrating multiple data sources, conducting literature review and best practice review, performing benchmark analyses, and communicating results that will inform practice and decision making.
- Serve as IPAR representative on UNC system-wide workgroups to provide feedback on data and methodology, validate results for ECU, and communicate results to campus.
- Provide consultation to faculty, particularly interdisciplinary faculty groups, on relevant data collection, analyses, and evaluation activities.
IR Leadership & Project Management - 25%
The
ADIR serves as the project manager for analytics projects, assists the
DIR with day-to-day operations of the unit, and provides oversight of the unit when the
DIR is unavailable.
- Mentor IR staff members and assist the DIR in the creation of an effective, dynamic IR team who have the technical and interpersonal skills to successfully advance institutional research and analytics at ECU.
- Manage team-based research and analytics projects within IPAR, include defining project objectives, assigning tasks, ensuring and documenting project progression, engaging and educating stakeholders, and monitoring the quality of deliverables.
- Serve as project manager on university-wide workgroups to facilitate project progression, follow through with workgroup activities, and promote effective teamwork.
Other - 5%
The
ADIR will represent
IPAR on various campus committees, task forces, or advisory groups as needed. Working with faculty, staff, and student data necessitates the utmost care in data security and confidentiality. The
ADIR is continually vigilant in assuring that policies and procedures related to data security are strictly enforced. Infrequently, the
ADIR will write
SQL queries to gather and combine data in response to ad hoc requests or take on additional duties as assigned.
This position is contingent upon available funding. |
Minimum Education/Experience |
- Master's degree from an accredited institution.
- At least three years of experience working within an Institutional Research or equivalent office in a college or university.
- Advanced data analytics skills with demonstrated expertise in quantitative research methods and a sound knowledge of qualitative research methods.
- Expertise with at least one statistical software (e.g., SAS, R, SPSS, Python).
- Experience using business intelligence and other data reporting tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau).
- Strong communication skills.
- Demonstrated expertise in managing, interpreting, and assuring quality of complex data sets.
- Demonstrated ability to present research and analytics projects to broad audiences through publications and/or presentations.

- Doctorate degree from an accredited institution.
- At least five years of experience working within an Institutional Research or equivalent office in a college or university.
- Experience working with Ellucian's Banner student data system or an equivalent enterprise data. management system used in higher education.
- Working knowledge of data warehouse/database tools (SQL Server, SQL Developer).
SQL querying skills.- Demonstrated ability to successfully lead and develop staff.
- Experience in project management, particularly on projects that involve multiple functional offices, subgroups, or layers of oversight.
- Experience working in an IR or equivalent office within the UNC system or in a school that is part of a university system.
- Strong collaboration and organizational skills.
