The Library Specialist is primarily responsible for supporting the work of the Access Services Collection Maintenance unit including returns, shelving, shifting, and materials preservation including identifying and triaging items for book repair. This position provides coverage for service points at the circulation desk and entry points of the Daley Library, enforces conduct policies to maintain a scholarly environment in the Library and monitors operations to report facilities and security issues. As a member of Access Services, the Library Specialist provides assistance to patrons via phone, email, and at service points in the Daley library, oversees the work of student employees, and supports other departmental ongoing and project work including processing fines & fees, missing & lost searches, and data collection.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Collaborates with others and takes a leading position with ongoing bookstacks projects: shifting, weeding/book disposal, stacks signage. Supports book preservations efforts for the general collection including identifying and triaging materials including simple mends, as well as binding repair, replacement requests, and communicating withdrawal recommendations to other departments. Supports day-to-day returns, collection maintenance, and shelving. Assists with fines, fees, claim returns, and billing processes.
  • Assists patrons at service points: answers questions in person, by phone, and in LibAnswers. Updates patron accounts, checks in/out materials, schedules study rooms, maintains security for the collection, and assists with routine fines/lost billing issues. Directs inquiries to appropriate resources. Collects and collates data and statistics for department. Maintains lost and found items log and follow up as needed. Supports collection maintenance projects as assigned.
  • Monitors building activities, and enforces conduct policies to maintain a scholarly environment. Monitors the activities of contracted security officers on library patrol. Secures the building at closing time. Reports security and facilities issues to appropriate staff and external resources.
  • Oversees the work of student assistants and workflows in the Daley Library during evening and/or weekend shifts. Contributes to the evaluation of student assistant work; reviews work for accuracy and completeness; records and reports student performance to student supervision team. Modifies assignments to ensure staffing coverage for the public service desks for all hours that the library is open.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications Required:

    1. High school diploma or equivalent.

    2. Any combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the following categories:

    A. work experience in a library or equivalent setting.

    B. college course work in any field as measured by the following conversion table
    • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
    • Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18 months)
    • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
    • Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years (36 months)
