Overview
The Utah State University College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Veterinary Technician to join our team as an Academic Veterinary Technician I. This individual will use their extensive experience as a veterinary technician to support the educational goals of the veterinary school and/or other veterinary professional programs and instruct veterinary students and/or other veterinary professionals. They will assist with hands on teaching labs and other simulated or live animal experiences. They may assist with developing curricula, preparing relevant content and materials, and organize, deliver, and/or facilitate classes, labs, conferences, trainings, and student live animal experiences. This is a staff teaching position.

Responsibilities
  • Assist with the implementation of a clinical skills curriculum for veterinary students in years 1-3, focusing on practical and hands-on training.
  • Serve as a team instructor in assigned courses in the CVM.
  • Develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and applicable IACUC protocols for clinical skills laboratories.
  • As part of a team, implement and deliver the clinical skills course series, ensuring that students master essential new graduate competencies related to veterinary clinical skills.
  • Support instruction with the development, maintenance, and application of simulated clinical skills teaching models (i.e., fabricate models, etc.).
  • Collaborate with staff and faculty members to integrate clinical skills training with theoretical coursework.
  • Mentor and guide students, providing feedback and support to enhance their learning experience.
  • Ensure all course content and teaching methods align with the latest academic standards and best practices.
  • Organize, prepare for, set-up, and participate in laboratory sessions and simulation exercises; and then perform post-activity duties including cleaning and storage of teaching materials, etc.
  • Assess and evaluate student performance, maintaining accurate records and providing constructive feedback.
  • Assist with other clinical, live animal, and simulated learning experiences as directed.
  • Fill other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Completion of an AVMA accredited Veterinary Technician training program OR an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
  • Credentialed as a licensed, registered, or certified veterinary technician OR eligible to become credentialed due to at least 3 years' experience working as a veterinary technician.
  • Successful passage of the Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) OR eligible to take the VTNE.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Specialty certification as a Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) or Veterinary Nurse Specialist (VNS) through a specialty recognized by the National Association of Veterinary. Technicians in America (NAVTA) Committee on Veterinary Technician Specialties.
  • Teaching and training experience within a veterinary technician or professional veterinary program.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Passion for veterinary education and a commitment to fostering the development of future veterinarians.

Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions. Primarily working in veterinary teaching laboratory environment. Must be able to lift 25-30 pounds.
