Under general supervision performs skilled mechanical or analytical duties on various projects. Performs security work in the protection of property and facilities against theft, vandalism, illegal entry, and other destructive activities.

About the Department and/or College

A free, public museum, the Museum of Texas Tech University is a diverse and multidisciplinary institution comprised of Anthropology, Art, Clothing and Textiles, History, Paleontology, Natural History, and 9.5 million objects. The Museum is over 200,000 square feet and features nine permanent galleries ranging from 20th and 21st-century art and southwest Indian art to the study of Biodiversity and the Ice Age to a diverse collection of dinosaurs to history. An additional 10 rotating galleries offer a culmination of exhibitions curated from the Museum's collections and curators and traveling exhibits from around the world.

Major/Essential Functions


  • Opens/closes the Museum Building using security systems, securing specified areas, and checking facilities. Opens/closes galleries including lighting, exhibit cases and cabinets, interactive displays, and audio/visual equipment.
  • Responsible for operating all alarm, CCTV, and access control systems and for monitoring these systems.
  • Responsible for acting upon discovered safety hazards and incidents of injury, coordinating a response, and reporting to the appropriate Museum staff.
  • Maintains a proficient knowledge of the facility and of potentially hazardous conditions such as illegal entry, malicious activity, and severe weather via monitoring of media, emergency services, and Museum security systems.
  • Reports problems regarding maintenance issues or other hazards to the appropriate Museum staff, including leaks, inoperative lighting, and vandalism inside the building or on the Museum campus.
  • Monitors and patrols the Museum building and campus to enforce rules and to ensure the safety and security of the facility, the collections and exhibits, and our staff, students, and guests.
  • While stationed at the Information Kiosk or another entrance, greets visitors and guests professionally, counts and reports on visitor numbers. Assists visitors, customers, and staff.
  • While stationed at the Information Kiosk, monitors video systems and radios, distributes keys/badges, and answers the telephone and radio systems; responds and reacts to alarms.
  • Reacts professionally in emergency situations and assists with the coordination and execution of building emergency procedures, including the use of first aid kits, AEDs, and fire extinguishers as circumstances dictate.
  • Works with the Security Team to coordinate and oversee appropriate access or escort of delivery personnel, maintenance staff, and other persons.
  • Operates and assists with the maintenance of the Museum scissor lift and forklift.
  • Responsible for delivering outgoing and incoming mail and lost-and-found items to designated areas.
  • Sets up or breaks down tables, chairs, AV/IT equipment, and other materials used for Museum-related or rental functions including classes, programs, events, and dinners.
  • Maintains proficient knowledge of University, Museum, and Operations policies and procedures including the Security Handbook, Emergency Preparedness Plan, floorplans, and other collections or institutional documents.

Required Qualifications

High School or equivalent and three years work experience. Additional job related education may substitute for required experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Security and/or Customer Service experience, Audio Visual operations, setting up equipment including computers and sound equipment for meetings and events.

Occasional Duties

Knowledge of relevant policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and institutions. Uses computers and electronic systems. Customer service

Pay Statement
