Summary

Leads research, design, and development activities to improve NYPA's energy services. Designs, constructs, and tests and operates equipment. Ensures that standards of quality, cost, safety, reliability, timeliness and performance are met throughout all engineering activities.

Oversees and maintains transmission-related projects and activities to produce high quality engineering solutions on schedule. Oversees cost recovery processes for NYPA's existent and new transmission assets.

Responsibilities
  • Provide lead engineer function in support of a wide range of transmission projects, design modification projects, equipment applications and failure research, engineering studies, and operations and maintenance activities.
  • Perform site visits to complete field inspections, condition assessments, and equipment evaluations and develop technical recommendations with moderate complexity.
  • Perform occasional emergency response, including outside of normal business hours.
  • Independently coordinate cross disciplinary activities for the successful development and execution of projects.
  • Select and apply codes, standards and procedures to work tasks appropriately.
  • Perform inspections and evaluations to ensure engineering requirements and Authority specifications are satisfied.
  • Provide technical leadership in state-of-the-art engineering and analytical techniques.
  • Review designs, calculations, specifications, and reports produced by other internal engineers and external consultants.
  • Provide direction and review for the [electrical, mechanical, civil] design and drafting personnel in the development of project drawings.
  • Independently evaluates, selects, and adapts standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary engineering project of moderate to high complexity. Leads multidisciplinary engineering teams to complete projects.
  • Prepares scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments.
  • Evaluate and recommend implementation of technology advancements with a goal of reducing maintenance costs and improving worker productivity.
  • Prepare contract specifications and provide contract administration.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Proficient in the design, operation and maintenance of [electrical, mechanical, structural, water] systems specific to the electric utility industry.
  • Working knowledge of Transmission/Utility - make discipline specific - commercial and industrial facilities and their various systems and components].
  • Ability to apply diverse technical principles and practices, with the understanding of the NYPA's policies, operations and objectives, to engineering deliverables.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes, standards, regulations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented with ability to build relationships with vendors and stakeholders.
  • Ability to coordinate the technical and commercial aspects of projects.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations, and complete specifications, scopes of work, reports, and interdisciplinary design packages.
  • Competent in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Working experience with a [Civil/Structural, Electrical, Mechanical, Planning, water flow] design or forecasting software such as PLS-CADD or similar software preferred.
  • Ability to effectively manage and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Broad knowledge of transmission line design and construction, material specification and application, right-of-way maintenance, line maintenance procedures and maintenance of wood and steel transmission lines 115kV - 765kV.
Education, Experience and Certifications
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in [Electrical, Mechanical, Civil] Engineering, or equivalent, from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of work-related experience.
  • New York State Engineer in Training certification preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Approximately 50% travel primarily within NY State.
  • Ability to walk and drive on uneven and rough terrain for prolonged periods of time on a regular basis.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying degrees of weather, on various terrain, in various settings (i.e. wooded areas, etc.)

The estimated salary range for this position is: $120,000 - $165,000.The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates' relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
