Job Description

The Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory is a full-service laboratory accredited by the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians and member of the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN). It provides in-depth laboratory diagnostic support to veterinary practitioners, livestock and poultry industry interests, companion animal interests, wildlife conservationists, scientists utilizing animals in their research throughout the university, state and regulatory officials, and clinicians of the MU Veterinary Health Center. The laboratory handles more than 200,000 specimens a year and serves Missouri's 114 counties and surrounding states by performing over 170,000 diagnostic tests annually. The VMDL also conducts fundamental and applied research to address animal health and public health issues.

The Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (VMDL) is seeking to hire a Senior Clinical Lab Technician to work in the Clinical Pathology Section. This position entails working at the receiving and initial sample processing area, but may also include varying levels of specimen testing, instrument maintenance, and quality assurance tasks.

Representative Duties Include:

  • Check specimen quality and labeling upon receipt of samples for testing, contact submitter to correct problems as needed.
  • Electronically process testing requests and create accessions for samples through a laboratory information system.
  • Prepare samples for testing (for example, centrifuge blood tubes, harvest plasma and serum).
  • Distribute specimens to appropriate laboratory workstations.
  • Prepare samples for shipment to outside laboratories.
  • Collect and distribute mail and specimens from the VMDL to the clinical pathology lab if needed.
  • Attach external laboratory results to patient accessions.
  • Perform select test procedures on veterinary samples.
  • Answer client questions/assist clients over the phone and in person.
  • Assist with instrument maintenance and quality assurance procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized workspace.
  • Assist with stocking and ordering laboratory supplies.
  • Triage tasks appropriately and multi-task effectively during busy times.
  • Comply with VMDL quality assurance system and participate in general laboratory quality assurance procedures.
  • Perform other laboratory duties as assigned by supervisor.
Shift

Full-time 40 hours.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent and at least two years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

A year or more of laboratory or research experience.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range $19.50 - $21.49 per hour, salary commensurate with education and experience
