I. JOB OVERVIEW


Job Description Summary:
The Graduate School of Education and Human Development ( GSEHD) community is dedicated to the mission of leading innovation through learning. Our students emerge from our programs enriched in theory and practice and become agents of change in education and human services.

The Associate Dean, Academic Administration and Operations serves as the key liaison for the Dean of GSEHD in the administrative operations of the School. This position is a member of the Dean's leadership team responsible for the central coordination of all activities of the Dean and Dean's office. This position will also serve as an active participant in institution-wide initiatives and committees, and forms collaborative relationships with schools and divisions. This role oversees related functions and resources used for program activities, such as technology, finance, and communications. This is an executive position at the university that, in addition to leading a major function at the organization, has enterprise-wide scope and leads and manages the staff of the unit to strategically accomplish university goals.

The primary focus is to ensure effective communication, collaboration, planning and implementation of the daily operations of GSEHD. The position also partners with the Dean and Assistant/Associate Deans to provide effective leadership to the School's departments, faculty, students and staff.

Specific duties include:

  • Advises Dean, the Senior Associate Dean, and the Associate Dean for Research and External Affairs on key planning issues and makes recommendations on strategic planning and resource allocation.
  • Implements programs as directed by the Deans to meet institutional goals and objectives.
  • Participates in program reviews and decision-making regarding changes to programs, including sunsetting and additions.
  • Holds responsibility for the overall administration and business operations and oversees the School's day-to-day internal operations through coordination with the finance office, the technical services (and information technology) office, human resources activities.
  • Works closely with the Dean and Academic Dean managing faculty appointment processes, contract negotiations, and faculty personnel administrative actions. Oversees faculty recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and policy compliance in coordination with the Provost's Office.
  • Works closely with the Associate Dean for Research and External Affairs, in support of faculty and students in the development and management of external grants and contracts.
  • Develops and communicates the School's mission and strategic vision to the faculty and staff, in conjunction with the Deans.
  • Implements and leads a continuous quality improvement process of services throughout the School, focusing on systems and process improvement.
  • Oversees space planning for the School's faculty and staff.
  • Advises the Dean and the Senior Associate Dean on planning and execution of communication strategies, especially in the areas of student marketing, recruitment, and services.
  • Directs the preparation of the Annual GSEHD Marketing & Recruitment Plan.
  • Works with the Director of Finance on preparation of operational budgets, manages School operations and services within the budget and responds to request for data from the other Deans.
  • Works closely with Department Chairs and Director of Finance on departmental budgets.
  • Helps ensure the continued financial viability of the School and Departments by providing input for all strategic planning processes with the Dean, Associate Deans and staff.
  • Promotes regular opportunities for all staff to give feedback on School operations.
  • Partners with HR to develop and implement staff training and career development plans/opportunities.


Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 10 years of relevant professional experience, Master's degree, or higher, in a relevant area of study preferred. Relevant experience must include at least 4 years of senior leadership/executive level experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree in higher education, business administration, management, organizational science, or a related field and a record of progressive experience in financial management, sponsor and client relations, performance management, marketing, and strategic planning.
  • Knowledge, experience, and demonstrated interest in complex operations management, including budget and finance, space planning, web development, IT services, and marketing.
  • Prior experience in higher education administration.
  • Track record of working with multiple external agencies, sponsors, and other funders (with emphasis on federal and philanthropic sources).
  • Experience in managing grant and contract development.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated teamwork and leadership skills.

Hiring Range $124,973.63 - $218,703.87
