I. JOB OVERVIEW


Job Description Summary:
The George Washington University university-wide Center for Teaching Excellence has an opening for a Director, Online Education. The Center for Teaching Excellence is located in the Gelman Library on the Foggy Bottom campus and is responsible for working with over 2,500 faculty and 10,000 graduate students. The Director of Online Education will oversee. a team of 5 instructional designers and 3 media producers who are responsible for completing high-quality online asynchronous academic courses, online asynchronous modules that support co-curricular learning, and professional media to support GW events and website. They will join a team of three energetic and talented directors to oversee the management of the Center for Teaching Excellence which includes Faculty Development and the Instructional Technology Lab.

This position provides leadership and supervision in the design, development, implementation, and continuous improvement of online/blended courses including the production of multimedia materials. This role provides functional supervision of the instructional design, technology, and multi-media production staff and related services, manages fiscal operations and the acquisition of software, learning resources, and other technological and non-technological resources, assists faculty with instructional strategy and in the development of online course materials, conducts programmatic evaluation of the unit work, and ensures continuous improvement through strategic operational planning. This position also provides technical assistance to faculty related to the use, exploration, problem solving and experimentation using instructional technologies and promotes curricular innovation in instructional technology, online learning, and the use of media to support learning. This role may also coordinate in-depth, instructional technology development projects and conduct evaluations in support of significant projects. This is a management position at the university that, in addition to leading a work unit, leads and supervises staff directly, makes hiring decisions, provides coaching, training and mentoring, manages performance and determines future staffing needs. This position is typically enterprise-wide and is single-incumbent if within a school.

Reporting to the Associate Dean, Teaching and Learning Excellence, the Director, Online Education will:

  • Oversee online educational design program activities, including online and blended course development and revisions. Works with the Associate Dean of Teaching and Learning, in developing procedures to support efficiency, instructional materials, and technical leadership. Establish and manage deliverables and deadlines for development of all courses.
  • Support faculty in the development and design of appropriate teaching and learning strategies utilizing the latest instructional technology and design theories.
  • Evaluate and assess university systems/needs around online education.
  • Design, develop, and deliver workshops, training sessions, user guides, and other documentation to faculty and professional staff on instructional design and media production topics.
  • Build a community of faculty interested in online pedagogy by working with returning Instructional faculty and other instructional designers at the University.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge about accessibility issues and potential solutions.
  • Maintain department budget: prepare annual report, budget forecasts, and report on program enrollment and projections. Serve as a point person for contracts associated with client schools.
  • Review and revise contractual agreements, policies, and procedures. Anticipate and monitor programmatic, administrative, and technical issues, recommending appropriate responses and strategies.
  • Develop and analyze survey and evaluation data for continual course and program improvement.
  • Represent the University at select conferences. Research and integrate new technologies and best practices.
  • Serve as divisional oversight of the Instructional Designer Committee under the supervision of the Associate Dean.


Perform other related duties as assigned. The position is based at GW's Foggy Bottom Campus in Washington, DC. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 8 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master's degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 6 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Six years of experience in educational program administration is preferred.
  • Six years of relevant professional experience overseeing the creation of online courses at an institution of higher education is preferred.
  • Six years of experience creating online courses at an institution of higher education is preferred.
  • Four years producing media for online courses is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Blackboard, interactive media, and course design software.
  • Experience teaching at the University level.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organization, and communication skills.
  • Program Evaluation experience.
  • Quality Matters peer reviewer certification.

Hiring Range $88,562.15 - $154,055.84
