Schedule: 40 Hours, Days, Full-Time, Benefit Eligible

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for operating the pre-analytical sections of the laboratory, including phlebotomy, processing, referral testing, specimen transport, and laboratory collection stations. Responsibilities include staff orientation and training, daily direction of staff, interviewing and hiring, coordination of quality improvement activities, generation of statistical information, problem-solving, participating in regulatory agency inspections, and supporting laboratory collection stations and medical offices. Additionally, the role involves participating in budget preparation, monitoring, and variance reporting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Patient Flow and Customer Service:

  • Communication:

    • Ensure effective communication among staff and interdepartmentally.
    • Communicate with referral labs regarding issues, new procedures, and referral test billing.



  • Laboratory Operations:

    • Manage patient registration, specimen collection for both hospital-based patients and outpatients, specimen processing, referral testing, specimen transport, and lab report delivery.
    • Develop workflows, procedures, and policies to support laboratory operations.
    • Participate in regular reviews of quality metrics and initiate or propose necessary changes and improvements.



  • Compliance and Standards:

    • Consistently adhere to OSHA, CAP, TJC, DPH, and BMC South standards at all times.
    • Comply with and maintain HIPAA regulations.



  • Staff Management:

    • Develop, implement, and maintain proper scheduling and staffing levels.
    • Manage direct reports in compliance with current employment laws and within the guidelines of BMC South policy.
    • Provide all direct reports with regular feedback, both positive and constructive, and conduct annual performance evaluations.
    • Develop and assist in maintaining job descriptions for all direct reports.
    • Monitor, audit, and maintain records regarding time sheets, absenteeism, and vacation records for all direct reports.
    • Conduct interviews, provide or coordinate training for new employees, and coordinate educational activities for both lab and non-lab staff.



  • Safety and Quality Assurance:

    • Identify safety issues, gaps, and opportunities for improvement. Report issues immediately following the chain of command and problem-solve.
    • Participate in the Quality Assurance program.
    • Monitor the condition, safety, and effectiveness of the physical environment and initiate corrective action when necessary.



  • Administrative Duties:

    • Investigate and resolve administrative and/or patient problems professionally.
    • Participate on committees and actively participate in meetings.
    • Assist with the creation of agendas and recording of department meeting minutes for distribution.



  • Policy Adherence:
    • Adhere to BMC South policies and procedures, including personnel policies, safety policies, and clinical policies and procedures.


  • Collaboration:
    • Work with various departments as needed for problem-solving and implementation of new processes.


  • Other Duties:
    • Perform other duties as assigned.


Requirements:



  • Education: Associate's degree required, Bachelor's degree preferred

  • Experience: At least 3 years of experience in a clinical laboratory setting and at least 2 years of lead or supervisory experience

  • Certification/Licensure: suggested PBT, MLT, MLS/MT (ASCP), ASCP Eligible, or equivalent

  • Software/Hardware: Experience with laboratory information systems: Meditech, Epic, Microsoft365
