The Medical Underwriter will review new applicants' medical history to evaluate risk and assess data to determine group plan pricing. This individual will collaborate with financial underwriting, case installation and sales teams. They will develop knowledge as a subject matter expert in Medical Underwriting.

Primary Responsibilities:



  • Process underwritten enrollment applications, reports, and transactions
  • Handle all underwriting related concerns
  • Answer incoming phone calls from Applicants, Agents (and Agents with their clients) with questions regarding the underwriting process
  • Write clear, concise, grammatically and factually correct letters
  • Complete applications within established turnaround times to meet service level targets
  • Communicate effectively with others to ensure prompt and accurate resolution of issues
  • Work independently to prioritize and organize workload
  • Provide expertise and customer service support to insured members, applicants, agents, and all other customers
  • Meet quality and productivity standards

Required Qualifications:



  • 1+ years of experience in underwriting and experience with insurance or assessing risk
  • Proficiency in and experience with MS Office suite (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
  • Proven effective analytical and problem-solving skills, sound judgment, solid decision-making ability and confidence to make difficult decisions
  • Proven excellent oral and written communication skills

The hourly range for this role is $23.70 to $46.35 per hour based on full-time employment. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable. In addition to your salary, UnitedHealth Group offers benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements).
