Job Description
The IT Manager - Specialized Systems leads a team of advanced IT specialists dedicated to providing technology support and solutions to researchers across the University of Missouri System. This position is responsible for the day-to-day management of the IT Specialized Systems team within IT Research Support Services (IT-RSS), ensuring the effective delivery of IT services that facilitate a productive research environment. The manager will focus on team leadership, cross-campus collaboration, and strategic alignment of IT resources with researcher needs. This role requires a blend of personnel management, technical oversight, and strategic planning to ensure their team successfully supports complex research infrastructure and projects, with a key focus on maintaining secure, compliant environments for sensitive and restricted research data. Basic Function & Responsibilities: Demonstrate a high level of initiative, independence, and maturity in all aspects of work. Use creative and critical thinking to identify and implement new or novel ways to continuously improve services and service delivery. Contribute to the successful completion of assignments and projects by providing clear direction, balancing team workload, managing resources, and ensuring alignment with the strategic directives of university leadership. This position is responsible for the management of the team's personnel, projects, and operational priorities, including the critical responsibility of ensuring that supported systems meet stringent compliance requirements for Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), export-controlled data, and other sensitive information. Key Responsibilities: Leadership & Team Management
- Lead, mentor, and manage the Specialized Systems team, providing clear direction, performance evaluations, and professional development opportunities
- Manage the assignment and prioritization of work, ensuring their team has the organization, resources, and processes needed for success
- Foster a collaborative and high-performance team culture focused on providing excellent customer service to the research community
- Address personnel matters and ensure team operations are consistent with HR policies and processes
- Oversee technical troubleshooting and support for systems and devices within the research context
Strategic Collaboration & Development
- Collaborate with IT peers at Missouri S&T and other UM System campuses to ensure local team services are aligned with broader IT and research support initiatives
- Partner with the Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) to provide technical consultation for grant proposals and with the Research Compliance Office to implement and manage solutions for restricted research projects, including those involving CUI and export controls
- Serve on advisory committees and provide expertise on research support initiatives relevant to their team's function
- Work with IT leadership to develop and implement IT policies and procedures that effectively support the research mission
- Consult with researchers to understand their technology challenges and collaborate with their team and other departments to find effective solutions
Operational & Service Management
- Lead their team in identifying, implementing, and supporting processes and initiatives that benefit researchers across the campus and system
- Utilize IT Service Management (ITSM) principles to ensure the consistent and efficient delivery of services
- Oversee the establishment of new services provided by the team, from conception to delivery
- Conduct compliance evaluations on new and existing systems to ensure they meet the security and operational requirements for handling CUI, export-controlled data, and other sensitive information
- Establish and maintain service rate cards for IT services offered by the team to establish predictive services for grant and sponsor funded research
- Oversee team projects, ensuring they are well-defined, properly resourced, and completed in a timely manner
- Review campus technology purchases to determine viability, sustainability, and support capability within their team's scope of responsibility
- Coordinate work across multiple domains, including system administration, networking, vendor relations, and security, to ensure cohesive service delivery
Fiscal & Administrative Oversight
- Manage budgets with input from leadership and the team to ensure the unit is appropriately funded while exercising responsible financial stewardship
- Manage vendor relationships and participate in pricing negotiations
- Provide reporting on team performance and project status to leadership

Shift
- This position is primarily based in Rolla, Missouri, with occasional travel to partner campuses across the state
- On-campus presence is required
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- 5 years of experience with at least four years of related experience in an IT environment and at least one year of experience in a lead or management role
- Familiarity with IT systems, software, and infrastructure used in research and advanced academic environments
- Experience supporting a diverse range of operating systems (Linux, Windows, Mac OS) and network environments
- Experience planning and managing IT projects or technical staff
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with research and advanced academic environments
- Experience working in a multi-campus or federated IT environment
- Experience with budget management and resource planning
- ITIL Foundations Certification
- A graduate degree in a management-related field
Anticipated Hiring Range
The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $58,960-$83,304 annually. Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
