Position Summary:

The Tool and Die Maker at DESTACO supports all areas of Engineering and Operations through the production and modification of tools, fixtures, and products with the highest levels of precision and attention to detail. This position reports to the Supervisor, Manufacturing Engineering.

Essential Job Functions:

• Under general supervision, makes, repairs, adapts and rectifies parts, fixtures, tools and other pieces of mechanical equipment with high precision and attention to detail
• Understands all aspects of proficiently operating each machine in the department
• Working understanding of heat treatment processes for commonly used steels and tool steels
• Performs all work with Safety and Quality in mind
• Maintains high standards for housekeeping and 5S in the tool room area
• Able to work effectively with members of every department
• Independent and effective problem solver
• Utilizes basic math, geometry, and trigonometry
• Can calculate feeds and speeds
• Utilizes good communication skills including the ability to receive and give oral and written instruction
• Demonstrates good organizational, planning, and scheduling skills to optimize output
• Interfaces with internal and external customers, management, suppliers, and other employees
• Reads blueprints to recognize specifications on blueprint for various surfaces being machined
• Ability to make Metric / English print dimension conversions
• Demonstrates working knowledge of 3D CAD/CAM computer programs
• Reads and produces prints of specified tools, fixtures, assembly jigs, utilize such measuring equipment as micrometers, calipers, gauges as required to ensure that specified tolerances are met or exceeded
• Ensures that all responsibilities and functions performed are in accordance with company policy and procedures and meet required quality standards
• Operates within acceptable defect rate
• Identifies when preventative maintenance is needed on assigned equipment
• Must have basic computer skills for maintaining records, accessing prints, and communicating digitally
• Advises supervisor of conduct that may violate rules, policies, and procedures
• Other duties as assigned

Experience:

• At least 5 years minimum experience in a tooling environment
• CNC, CAD, CAM, and other computer-aided technologies experience strongly preferred

Education and Certification Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent supplemented by an apprenticeship in tool and die making or an equivalent technical education

• Stand 10 hours a day
• Good manual dexterity
• Eye hand coordination and attention to detail
• Ability to bend, twist and turn
