Why us, why now

The Senior Writer is responsible for elevating the brand reputation of the AAMC, communicating AAMC's value to our member institutions and the public, and advancing AAMC thought leadership and strategic priorities through highly visible digital content, including news articles, op-eds, website copy, social media, and special reports. The Senior Writer will report and write comprehensive news and opinion articles on a range of topics in academic medicine. In addition to developing expertise in one or more of the AAMC's key mission areas (biomedical research, patient care, medical education), the Senior Writer will be adept at translating AAMC legislative priorities, member innovation and initiatives, and medical research and data into compelling narratives.

How you will make an impact

Opinion & Thought Leadership Content:

  • Attend meetings, track news cycles and policy developments, and interview subject matter experts, including senior leaders across the association, to gain a better understanding of the key issues affecting academic medicine - specifically the AAMC's work to advocate for medical schools and teaching hospitals on Capitol Hill.
  • Research and write opinion pieces, special reports, website copy, and social media content that communicates the value of the AAMC and its work.

News & Feature Writing:

  • Write comprehensive stories on complex topics that help drive understanding of key issues in medical education, patient care, and medical research, and that elevate the AAMC as a leading voice for academic medicine.
  • Develop internal and external sources, and conduct background research, to inform reporting.
  • In the case of data-driven stories, connect with internal AAMC data and research teams to clarify trends and develop graphics to accompany stories.
  • Shepherd stories through the comprehensive internal review and copyediting processes.
  • Assist editorial director with additional tasks, including soliciting and editing viewpoints from academic experts, and writing social copy to support promotion of news stories.

Content development:

  • Develop story ideas consistent with AAMC strategic priorities by attending AAMC meetings and webinars, connecting with staff around the association, reading key news media and scientific journals, maintaining connections with constituents, and otherwise staying abreast of news and trends in academic medicine.
  • Present ideas for news articles and opinion pieces to the Editorial Team during regular story development meetings.
