Job Summary

Under the direction the Large Animal Clinic Manager(s), provides day-to-day supervisory and technical support to Equine Lameness & Surgery, Equine Integrative Sports Medicine, Farrier shop and Equine Emergency. Work closely with veterinarians throughout the Large Animal clinic to coordinate daily receiving schedule as it pertains to lameness, operating room, advanced imagining and emergency cases. Assess staff training needs, provide staff training, develop, manage and update training protocols and safety documents. Evaluate staff on work performance. Work closely with the veterinarians in Equine Surgery and Large Animal Anesthesia & related services to accomplish the missions of providing excellent patient care, professional student instruction & resident training. Perform administrative functions to ensure timely, accurate charge capture, inventory and order needed supplies for special surgeries. Monitor clinical equipment needs of various clinical services. Coordinate or perform maintenance and repair of medical equipment and facilities. Hire, train, and schedule career and student work employees in order to support clinical services and farrier shop.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Must possess a Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substance Permit (VACSP) or obtain within 3 months of date of hire.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Experience handling, restraining and working with horses of all types and temperaments to ensure safety and effectiveness.
  • Experience preforming sterile preparation for joint injections, lacerations repairs and a variety of other routine and emergency procedures.
  • Experience supervising staff in a large animal hospital, veterinary specialty or emergency service setting.
  • Experience providing treatments on patients with life threatening illness or injury based upon clinician's orders, and ability to provide technical assistance to clinician during life threatening situations.
  • Experience developing, implementing and managing technical SOP's, procedural SOP's and enforcing safety protocols and maintaining training documentation in a veterinary hospital setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal and oral communication skills to clearly and effectively interact with individuals of varying ages, cultural backgrounds, and perspectives to secure and/or provide information to clarify situations, resolve problems, make referrals, as it pertains to standard operating room policies and procedures.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
  • Experience in surgical preparation and positioning of patients for common large animal surgical procedure.
  • Knowledge of advanced surgical equipment.
  • Experience using Veterinary Medical & Administrative Computer System (VMACS).

The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.
