THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this internship, you will collaborate closely with the Mechanic Supervisor to develop essential skills for safe and efficient work in an automotive garage. You will learn to perform general repairs and maintenance on cars and light trucks, assisting with various tasks and eventually executing repairs independently. Once you demonstrate proficiency, you will utilize power, hand, and air tools, while also maintaining cleanliness in your work area and caring for tools and equipment. It is important to ask questions whenever you face uncertainties or new challenges, and to consistently practice safety protocols. You will gain knowledge in general repair and preventative maintenance, including oil changes, tire replacements, brake inspections, and more. Additionally, you will learn proper handling and storage of tools, as well as safety procedures related to hazardous materials and equipment. Soft skills such as punctuality and accountability will also be emphasized, along with the completion of time sheets and computer diagnostics. As you progress, you may assist experienced tradespeople with more complex repairs, including engine rebuilds and transmission work. If you are a minor, please note that travel during work hours will be supervised by a staff member.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Work schedule will vary based on agreement between high school and COPA location
  • This internship will run July 1, 2025 and end on June 30, 2026.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Internship Requirements:

  • You must be at least 16 years of age.
  • You must be a junior or senior enrolled in high school during the 2025 - 2026 school year.

Additional Requirements:
  • Letter of Recommendation: You must attach a Letter of Recommendation from your school's co-op coordinator, career or guidance counselor, or similar designated school professional indicating you meet your school's requirements and are being recommended for this opportunity.
  • Work Permit: Minors will be required to submit their Work Permit upon acceptance of this position.
  • By participating in this program, the student and school agree to use the Commonwealth's Training Plan, Statement of Responsibilities, and Student Performance Evaluation. Forms will be provided to the student upon acceptance of this position.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
