Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The mission of the School of Nursing is to enhance and improve the health and well-being of the people of North Carolina and the nation, and, as relevant and appropriate, the people of other nations, through its programs of education, research, and scholarship, and through clinical practice and community service. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Nursing has been the leader in nursing education in North Carolina throughout its history. Established in 1950, it was the first school of nursing in North Carolina to offer a four-year baccalaureate nursing degree program followed by the first master's degree program, the first continuing education program for nurses, first doctoral program, and first accelerated BSN option to students with college degrees. Today, the School is renowned for its academic programs, its research and its commitment to clinical and community service within state, national and global communities.
Position Summary
Dr. Jada Brooks is a nationally recognized Indigenous scholar and nurse researcher at the UNC Chapel Hill School of Nursing. Dr. Brooks and her team focus on community-based participatory research, reducing health disparities, cardiovascular health, environmental pollutant exposures, and mindfulness-based stress reduction. Dr. Brooks and her team are searching for a Research Assistant (RA) to support the Research Project Manager in Robeson County, NC.

The primary purpose of this position is to provide research support for research conducted in/around Robeson County, NC. The RA will be responsible for attending in-person data collections and recruitment events, providing research support, providing technical assistance to research participants, and coordinating research activities. Some required activities fall outside of normal business hours (evenings and weekends).

This position may meet with study participants at their homes or in public locations to conduct data collections and/or provide incentives within/around Robeson County.

This position is based in Robeson County, NC. Candidates must reside in or be within reasonable commuting distance to Robeson County, NC.

The RA must have reliable transportation and a valid NC driver's license.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the field assigned and one year of related training or experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Attend in-person data collections and recruitment events in Robeson County, North Carolina at least 2 times per week
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with diverse audiences, while also exhibiting strong interpersonal skills
  • Work independently with precision and exceptional attention to detail while managing time efficiently
  • Adapt to flexible scheduling needs, including occasional evenings and weekends
  • Prioritize and coordinate multiple, competing tasks without compromising research integrity or quality
  • Apply comprehensive knowledge of social/clinical research principles, study methodologies, and data analysis techniques
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Institutional Review Boards (IRBs)
  • Follow established research protocols and adhere strictly to compliance standards, operating procedures, and ethical guidelines
  • Confidently use virtual platforms (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams) to collaborate with research teams and engage with study participants
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, and Word
  • Support technical assistance requests with participants using a smartphone and tracking device
  • Bring at least one year of direct experience working with human subjects in a research setting OR at least one year of direct experience working in a higher education setting

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Experience supporting programs or research projects in Southeastern North Carolina
  • Experience working with minority populations
  • Experience coordinating multiple projects at once in a research or academic setting
  • Experience with online data capture systems such as REDCap and Qualtrics
