Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Department of Health Behavior is one of seven departments in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina. Founded in 1943, the Department develops, and disseminates knowledge and interventions that promotes the health of individuals and communities. The Department's 25 faculty members have backgrounds in behavioral science, health education, international health, social and cognitive psychology, medicine, medical sociology, and communications, and are united by their commitment to the disciplines of public health together with the social and behavioral sciences. |
Position Summary |
Capstone Teaching Fellows provide course, team, and program support.
Specific teaching fellow responsibilities include:
Course Support
- Help develop and administer course materials.
- Maintain course Canvas sites and materials.
- Help create course communications.
- Coordinate logistics and materials for Capstone events.
- Assist with grading of course assignments.
- Answer students' questions and help address concerns.
- Help identify students who would benefit from additional help and/or outside resources.
- Help manage students', preceptors', faculty advisers', and accreditors' interests and priorities.
- Support feedback exchange and problem solving among Capstone parties.
- Help promote consistency across Capstone projects' depth, scope, and quality.
- Support ongoing quality improvement efforts.
Team Support
- Read and respond to weekly updates from Capstone teams.
- Monitor teams' work plans to ensure project work is going according to plan.
- Provide technical support and direct teams to resources as needed.
- Provide feedback on draft deliverables.
- Support teams with conflict management and navigating professional relationships with peers, faculty, preceptors, and community members.
Project Recruitment, Selection, and Matching Support (Spring 2026)
- Help identify and recruit potential community partners for AY 26-27.
- Assist with development of recruitment materials and project proposal form.
- Assist with proposal review process.
- Coordinate logistics and materials for sharing proposals with students and faculty.
- Assist with process for matching students and faculty to projects.
Evaluation Support
- Support efforts to review literature, analyze data, and prepare Capstone evaluation presentations and manuscript(s).

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
A background in the area of health behavior/health equity, social justice & human rights is required.
Excellent communications skills (oral and written) is required. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Exposure to course work in Public Health; Health Behavior or Health Equity, Social Justice & Human Rights is preferred. |
Special Physical/Mental Requirements |
Must be able to attend Capstone (
HBHE 746/992) class in person from 11:00-12:15 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the
UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health and participate in a weekly 1-hour teaching team meeting (format
TBD). Additional hours will vary. |
