The Lieutenant of Investigations plays a pivotal leadership role at FSUPD, overseeing the Criminal Investigations Section, Drug and Violent Crimes Section, and Intelligence Officer. This position is responsible for high-stakes law enforcement operations, including search and arrest warrants, undercover operations, surveillance, and collaboration with local, state, and federal partners. With a seat on FSUPD's Command Staff, the Lieutenant of Investigations directly contributes to the safety and security of a major university community while mentoring investigative personnel and supporting high-priority, high-visibility cases and will report up to the Captain of Support Services.

Your responsibilities will include:

    Supervise the operations and personnel of Criminal Investigations, Drug and Violent Crimes, and Intelligence
  • Oversee surveillance, confidential informant management, and high-risk operations
  • Direct complex case assignments and ensure investigative procedures align with case law and policy
  • Lead proactive and reactive law enforcement efforts including violent crime investigations
  • Collaborate with federal, state, and local partners, including the State Attorney's Office
  • Leverage law enforcement technologies (LPR, facial recognition, BWC systems, AI-based crime analysis tools)
  • Serve as an incident commander on-call and provide courtroom testimony and legal documentation
  • Participate in Command Staff and contribute to organizational leadership and strategy

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 4 years of sworn law enforcement experience, OR
  • High school diploma/equivalent and 8 years of sworn law enforcement experience (or a combination totaling 8 years)
  • Must meet the requirements of Section 943.13, Florida Statutes
  • Valid Florida driver's license (or ability to obtain prior to hire)
  • Significant supervisory experience strongly preferred

Preferred Qualifications

  • Supervisory experience within investigations or violent crimes units
  • Strong command of Florida case law, arrest/search warrant procedures, and criminal policy

  • Take-home patrol vehicle

Work Schedule:

The role will involve on-call duties and expectations to be further discussed with the Captain of Support Services. It will require work outside the standard 9am-5pm, with flexibility for hours worked.
